I'm considering euthanizing a fish...

My oldest male molly came down with pop-eye a couple of weeks ago. I treated him with MB and treated the tank with aquarium salt and a combination of Nitrofurazone, Furazolidone, and Potassium Dichromate.

Despite all of this, the pop-eye persists and now he's got some flaring of scales on his underside. None of the other fish show any symptoms of disease at all. My cory cats have seemed VERY susceptible to infection in the past and they're fine.

This particular molly is the oldest in the tank and could be 18-24 months old easily. He's also been exposed to high ammonia levels on more than one occasion. He was in the current 55G when it was cycled and our previous 10G cycled 2 or 3 times because we were ignorant to the process.

Right now, I'm leaning towards some kind of internal organ failure that results in fluid retention, ie. kidney failure. My treatments are not only not making him better but he continues to worsen in spite of them. His condition is also deteriorating VERY slowly, whereas an infection I would think would progress much faster.

I would agree with this accessment based on your notes as to his history, age, etc.

I think treating is likely going to yield poor or no results at this point, so euthanizing is probably the best choice IMO.

Sorry to hear this. I have had to make this very difficult about some of my own fish and so I sympathize with you.
