I have a female betta who has gotten sick as of late. She was active, vigorous and still growing even when she got. She is 2 years and 3 months old (born at my house). Although she is sick now, she is still acting perfectly heathly aside from her appearance.
When I last did her water change, I noticed she was pineconing on one side. Immedietely I suspected dropsy but her other side was fine. I had never heard of dropsy only affecting one side.
So I phoned Carl and he recommended that I treat her in her 1 gallon with Kanaplex and Methyline Blue. And also to closely monitor the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate since MB kills nifrifying bacteria. So far I have tested the water and there have been no problems with that.
I just gave the fish the 3rd and final dose of Kanaplex today (the box says the maximum you should give is 3 doses). I have been doing 25-50% water changes every other day when administering the Kanaplex and adding 10 drops per gallon of methyline blue as well on these days.
Right now, she is better but is still pineconing at one side a little. The probelm is my mom forced me to throw away the Methyline Blue after a pretty large spill and will not allow me to get any again.
So I was wondering how to proceed on the fish's treatment from here. I finished the treatment of Kanaplex so I'm guessing I should wait a few days, do a water change, and then resume on that if her side isn't further returning to normal on its own.
Should I treat he with something else in addition to the Kanaplex since I won't be adding the MB in combination with it anymore? Aso, how many days should I wait before I resume the Kanaplex treatment?
Also, out of curiousity, do the medications Paraguard and Potassium Permanganate easily stain things? I have both of these at my house and have used them but would just like to know in case something were to happen with them.
On the note of the Methyline Blue again, it is a shame that I had to throw it away but it has stained the carpet and seems to get stain the bathtub I do water changes in no matter how hard I try to avoid it. As of late, a few small dried flakes of MB had gotten on the floor when I unscrewed the lid. And when they got moistened from when I did the water change, they changed to liquid and stained the floor. Methyline Blue has saved a few of my fish but has caused more frustration with hours of scrubbing and my mom being upset with me for staining things. So I hope everyone can understand the reasons that I cannot use it anymore.
Thanks you very much.
