Tank Size: 2.5 gal Age of the tank: 1 year pH: Ammonia: NitrAtes: nitrites: GH/KH: Temperature: Fish: Delta Tail Betta Symptoms: Poor Pete has a weird tumor looking thing on his head near his eye. It's not white, it's kind of the same color as his skin. I skimmed through Carl's articles quickly to see if there was anything about them, but I didn't see anything. I may have missed it.
I'll try to post a pic sometime tomorrow, but it's going to be really hard to spot it since it is the same color as his skin. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

I do not have any specific article (sorry), I think this may be a tumor. A picture may help identify this if a good picture is possible. This article is the only one that has limited cancer/tumor information: Aquarium Answers; Use of UsneaHere is a blurb from this article: "*Tumors and cancers in fish, especially Carp Pox which is very common in Koi and Goldfish and often appears as tumor like growths, usually "whitish" although sometimes the same color as surrounding scales (this though is more likely a tumor) -VERY Preliminary results so far."In the mean time, I would suggest a bath that include Usnea which has some anti viral and anti cancer properties. As well swabbing with Potassium Permanganate may help as well. Carl

This is the clearest picture I could get. It's on the right side of his head and it's kind of a pink color. It almost looks like a wart or a smaller version of the weird bubble-head things that the one kind of goldfish develops as it ages. I don't know what that's called.

The pink color suggests increased circulation in this area. This in turn suggests possibly a tumor/cancer. My suggestion is to keep him in the best water condtions possible and maybe consider baths with Usnea. Maybe treatment or use in baths with Tetracycline may help (I have observed this on occasion, but I have never confirmed this in controlled tests) Carl

I wasn't able to find meds at Petsmart last weekend and haven't had time to do anything else about Pete since then until today, when I decided to at least try a MB bath because he looks so bad. I'm going to add some salt to his water also. Is it worth trying anything else at this point? Please excuse my finger. It was the only way to get him to face the right direction, lol.

He really is a beautiful fish other than this red area. The MB baths are certainly worth the effort IMO (I doubt the Potassium Permanganate swabbing would help with this though, although swabbing with MB might be helpful). Salt is worthwhile as well.

I feel terrible for him. It looks like he got into a really bad fistfight. It's started to make his right eye look yucky now too. He actually doesn't seem to be too bothered by it. He still eats and is active. I will keep trying MB baths and will try to gently swab some onto the affected area. I get so nervous when I try to do that though. They get so squirmy.

I had a betta with a similar problem. Only he never had a red area. His face got swollen and then he got a serious case of pop eye in one of his eyes. I medicated him and he made a full recovery (I believe his vision was fine afterwards as well). Unfortunately I don't remember what I used to treat him and I also no longer have him (he died a few months back). But I hope me telling you about my experience can help you a bit with yours. Best of luck Babygeige! Hope it clears up!

Nothing that I did seemed to be helping. It just keeps getting redder and bigger. He is getting a little less active, but will still eat and follow my finger a bit, so I'm just going to leave him be until he can't eat or function well anymore. Then I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Thanks for the input and support though everyone!

Sorry babygeige If this is a cancer/virus in cause, there probably is little you can do, other than provide the best care possible. Carl

Do you remember when I first got him? He was having a hard time eating. He eventually got to where he could eat betta dots ok, but he still has trouble with flakes and occasionally can't get a dot down too. I am wondering if he's had a little tumor or something inside his head all along that was preventing him from eating properly and it has now grown to where it is sticking out of his head.
Does that sound like a plausible thing?

Does that sound like a plausible thing? Yes, very plausible. In fact I have seen variations of this with fish that I or a client received that were weak from the beginning, unfortunately even with the best of care the fish would suffer an untimely death. What is sad for Pete is he is such a beautiful fish and does not show other issues such as a deformed body, etc. Carl
