I purchased a used aquarium today and I just can't figure out how to set up the filter, I have the big plastic thing under the gravel and there is 4 nozzles sticking up with 2 of them capped off. I also have 2 tubes that fit onto those nozzles, an air pump with lots of tubing, two tubes with airstones on the ends of them. Am I missing some parts or is there a way to put this all together? Thanks in advance Joe

I have a tiny 1.5g hospital tank that started off with the UGF. It had the plastic grid underneath with a single airstone you connect to your air pump through the plastic lift tube. I have to say it didn't work too well and would get blocked easily after running a while. Then you would get a sporadic big bubble instead of a continuous stream or even nothing when it was badly blocked until you stirred the gravel up. I eventually canned the UGF and went with a simple sponge filter in this tank which has worked much better. You may get better results with yours, good luck!

I agree w/ fishfever - I have the same tiny tank that I put fry into for a couple of days - many, many years ago, I had tanks w/ ugf and didn't realize what a pain in the butt they were til I tried something different - however, they do make some models that come w/ powerheads that are supposed to be efficient but you really have to be mindful of all the crap that collects in the bottom will turn your tank toxic if you're not adamant about cleaning it!
