I have 3 pearlscale ryukins, 2 black moores, a big commet, and a turtle all living in a bathtub. I've also got several plecos and other fish too. I noticed all the nice green algea in the tub and the water requirements for the plecos are pretty solid, but ive read that sometimes plecos like to eat the slime coat off goldfish. Im wondering if since the bathtub is so big do you guys think that I should still worry about this? Im not worried about the turtle messing with the pleco cause he has had pleanty of oportunities with the other goldies and hasnt even tried to nibble on em. he is addicted to his turtle food. Very domesticated. All that algea has got to be enough to keep the plecos happy right? The two plecos i was thinking of introducing to the tub are a 3 inch normal pleco and a 2 inch clown. the goldies are about 4-6 inches. and the turtle is 6 inches. thanks for the help you guys.

in the house? sounds like an awesome project although I bet it makes bathing kinda strange....is it a fiberglass tub or an enameled iron tub? what are you doing for filtration? plecos and gldies are also jumpers so be careful! good luck and have fun! just remember, a normal sized bathtub only holds 55 gallons of water if I'm not mistaken - someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that

it feels like plastic so i guess fiberglass...idk? it not iron. I have a cascade400 submersable filter at the moment and i do weekly water changes of about 30 %. I have two clamp lights with a uva/uvb bulb in one and a 100 watt house bulb in the other for heat. the cascade 400 is barely enough if not not enough filtration but between that and the water changes it seems to be working out fine. the tub is only about 2/3rds full so i could put in more water if i need to. I just didnt want to over work the filter. Im wondering basically if you guys think the plecos are gonna eat my goldie's slime coats off or will that tub full of algea keep em happy. also if i put the plecos in there would I need to get a heater in there? mabey i should stick in a thermometer and find out for myself lol.

if this turtle doesnt go after the goldies, it is worth trying the pleco...especially the common one. as for attaching and sucking the goldfish slime coat, a healthy goldfish will always put a quick stop to that. i wouldnt be worried about that at all....

Carl sells a sponge filter that would work great and also provide some aeration and water movement - americanaquariumproducts.com/SpongeFilter.html - I use the 5 pro - works great! he also sells pond heaters - both are really well priced and extremely efficient! I keep fish in a 125 gallon horse water trough and it works great! I also keep plecos in there - the common will grow to be a monster! LOL!

Carl is full of good deals - the heater was extremely reasonable too! how's your water parameters? are you able to fill the tub right from the tap? well water? what other fish do you have in there? btw, the link to Carl's business is right at the top of the page....American Aquarium Products - some incredible deals!

OK cool. I just got a new credit card so y not! lol. the thermometer has leveled off at just over 68 so i bet those goldies and the turtle would like a lil more heat. especially if i put the plecos in there. Im glad i checked. Carl, how bout a first time buyer's discount?

68 is fine for the turtle and goldies....but a lil on the chilly side for a pleco. better to warm it up to around 75.
John....he does waterchanges by pulling the plug and filling out of the tap....

i assume it is chlorinated....just drop in a lil dechlorinater....thats what i do on my water changes. hose from tap into the tank then a lil squirt of dechlorinater right into the tank...

Yup its regular ole chlorinated city water. I do add aquasafe durring waterchanges. I have a hard time stopping the goldfish from eating the turtle food but other than that no other real issues and thats not really a problem. the high protein food is making the fish get big faster than normal though, kinda cool. I wonder what the long term effects of this will be. Ill keep updating this and let yall know how it goes.

Very clever idea. I never thought of keeping fish in a bathtub. lol How do you make sure the stopper doesn't come loose and doesn't let any water escape down the drain? Just curious. Very creative setup!
