I have a seaclear system II aquarium with 4 chambers in the back. From left to right -the first houses a protein skimmer then there's an empty chamber, then trickle system with bio balls and finally the pump. Can I put my heater in the empty chamber or does it need to be in the main aquarium?

Although you can place a glass submersible in this chamber, you will get a better heater dispersion in my experience in a high flow area of the main tank, as well, on rare occasions that this chamber should run dry, you also have less risk of heater failure. For Titanium heaters, they do not do well at all in confined spaces and should always be in the main aquarium. Aquarium Answers; HeatersCarl

many aquariests prefer the heater in the sump for asthetic purposes. it actually works well that way, but carl is right about the high flow area....
