I've been running this LED light for a little over a month now, I guess. I really do like it! My plants seem to be going on with business as usual - the anubias just sprouted one its cute little flower things. And I even cut it in half a couple of weeks ago, so I'm pretty happy with this light.
I guess the thing now will be to see how long it will last!

Wow, that looks great! Baby angel fish have to be one of the cutest things ever. I got my Pierre (koi angel) when he was about the size of a quarter. Too cute!

Looks great so far! I really like the tall centerpiece wood. What kind of fish are you planning on adding?

I did about 1 tsp or so to a half gallon of water for about 7 minutes. Then I rinsed it very well, and put it in some fresh water with a generous amount of water conditioner. This was back on Saturday. I left it in that water until this evening, rinsed it out and threw it in the tank. It seems to be ok so far since the bleach bath. It didn't take long for the shrimp to find it and check it out, lol.

Yeah, just trying to kill any bacteria, etc that the moss ball could have carried from the lfs. Or... SNAILS!! I didn't see any in that tank, but you never know! I've done bleach dips for most new plants in the past - the one time I didn't... SNAILS!!! Just wasn't sure if it would be bad for the moss ball. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes, lol.

After years of looking at the moss balls in the lfs tanks, I finally broke down and bought one. They had a bunch of them in a tank with fish, so I just have the moss ball in a bucket of water for now. I'm debating on whether to just leave it in the bucket by itself for a week or two to make sure it's not carrying anything that will harm my fish or shrimp, or just doing a bleach water bath so I can put it in my tank sooner.
I looked around online a little bit and some people said a bleach bath is fine and others said they killed their moss ball with one. It could be that those people just did it with too much bleach, but before doing anything I wanted to see anyone here has ever bleach bathed a moss ball?

Hmmm...that's annoying. I posted a reply several days ago. Either something happened and it didn't go through, or I forgot to actually click "Post Reply." Oh well!
I decided to try out the light. I ended up at the lfs, where they had the Marineland one that you mentioned, Carl. I understand the points you make in your review, but I think it will be fine for the setup I have for my 10 gallon. If I like it, maybe later this year I'll get LED's for one or both of my other tanks. My 50 gallon is a pretty low tech setup too - just java fern and anubias. I'd probably have to get a better one for the 30 gallon though.
I do like the blue night mode the light has. It'll be nice to switch to it in the evening.

Hi there, welcome to the forum! I'm not familiar with UV Sterilizers at all, unfortunately. Carl sells a lot of great aquarium equipment at his online store though, and I'm sure once this post bumps your thread up, he'll have some input for you as well.

I have 2 angel fish in separate tanks. I have no idea if the one is a male or female, I just call him Pierre for fun. I didn't know what the other one was until she decided to lay some eggs on the aquarium heater, lol.

Yeah, those are probably a little out of my budget too... I'm not looking for super fast growth or anything. I'm very happy with how the plants in the 10 gallon are doing, I was just thinking it'd be nice to not have to change out the light bulb every year. I've got 6 years' worth of fluorescent bulbs sitting around, waiting to be taken to the recycling center, lol! btw Carl, the T2 light fixture link you inserted is broken. I found it though. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquariumbulb.htm

A few weeks ago I was cleaning my 10 gallon, and when I picked up the light, I kind of put my finger through the white plastic part (the part that helps hold the light bulb - I don't know the technical name). And a week or so later while cleaning, it cracked more. So it's kind of messy to deal with and I 'm going to replace it.
Would trying out an LED fixture be overkill for a 10 gallon tank planted with java fern, crypt lutea, and anubias? I've got about 40 busy red cherry shrimp in there, so there's almost no algae - I'm a little concerned that LED might be too powerful for my setup. I read over Carl's article a bit and it looks like I might be right...?

I've got one anubias nana in my 50 gallon tank. There's an angel in it and I've never had any problem with the plant being nibbled on. I've got a couple other types of anubias in there too. All of my plants are intact. I had a crypt lutea that my pleco liked to eat. (keyword being HAD, lol)

I know! I was so bummed. I took them back, and of course the stupid things were on clearance for $0.94. I paid like $2.39 for them, so I kind of got hosed. I'm considering sending Petsmart an email. I'm sure it won't do any good, but they're selling defective products and I think they need to be aware of it.

I bought a few cute holiday aquarium decorations from Petsmart. I cleaned them up and put them in tanks early last week. Snowman at work, Christmas tree in my 50, and a reindeer in the 30. Yesterday I went into work and noticed that paint was bubbling all over the snowman! I took it out, came home and checked the tree and reindeer and the paint on them was bubbling too! I'm pretty disappointed with Petsmart's Top Fin brand. I know they're bottom-end stuff, but I've bought their ornaments before and haven't had problems like this. I paid cash for these, so I don't have the receipt anymore, but I'm going to try to take them back anyway. I've also posted negative reviews and a photo on their website so that others will know to stay away! I figured I'd better let you all know about it too in case you're there and see them. I'm glad I noticed before the paint started to flake off in the water! It's a shame. They're really cute and I don't remember seeing holiday decorations for aquariums before. Everyone at work loved the snowman. Now he looks diseased! [a href=" "] [/a]

Let me know what you find out about this. I'm wondering if my betta girls have it too. It seems pretty similar to what you've described. I removed them from the community tank and am just trying to keep them "comfortable" until the inevitable occurs. Fortunately I haven't noticed any symptoms in the other fish. Yet, at least.
That's hard decision you have to make. You hate to give up on the ones you have, but yet in some ways it might be the best route, for you and the fish.

Everything has been pretty much the same in my 30 gallon as far as ugliness, until about a week ago I noticed the sudden reappearance of snails! Is it normal for them to just materialize out of nowhere? I haven't seen any in my tanks for months and months and now they show up in the 30 gallon. I haven't been as diligent with tank cleanings lately - I've had to skip a week here and there because I've been very busy. Maybe that's why they appeared, but all of my tanks are in the same boat. Anyway, I'm going to leave them alone (as much as it pains me to see those slimy things crawling all over my tank). It'll be interesting to see how much of a difference they make.

I lost both of mine on the same day. I was starting to think that they were getting better with the daily baths, but then they took a turn for the worse.
I've got 2 female bettas left in my 30 gallon tank. I'm keeping a very close eye to see if anything happens with them.

I'd hate to see you give it up altogether, but I know what you mean about the plants. What about even changing back to a lower tech setup? In my 10 and 50 gallon tanks, I've just got some anubias and java ferns. The only maintenance I ever have to do is cut out a dead java fern leave once a month or so. And a few times a year the anubias plant flowers, so that needs cut when it dies. If things get hectic and I'm not able to clean those tanks for a couple of weeks, it's no big deal.
It might be a happy medium between plant maintenance and plastic plants for you.
