hey all.got home to a very devistating sight. did my after work fish count and a head was missing. i looked and found my red bay snook upside down and having a very tough time breathing. his fins were a lil ragged this last week, but i thought little of it. today they are just spines. anyways, he is in a 10 gallon acrylic right now with meth blue and erythromycin. i am not sure what the problem with him is, but that seemed at the time to be my best choice of meds that i had here.i doubt he`ll survive the night. except for work, i am very unaccustomed to losing fish. especially a 14" friend. wish us luck in recovery....

Bill sorry for your loss hear!
I doubt that there was much you could do, although I would venture the guess that this fish was weak due to age or an unseen illness and antoher fish "helped him along"
Other than this, maybe you can look at some slides under the microscope.
How do the other fish look in his tank?

the other fish are all great. the snook in the past week or so was getting a LIL harrassed by the vieja. not sure if that is the problem tho. i am at a loss and very concerned. nothing in my tank is replacable. i keep the rarest of the rare and i wouldn`t be doing any of my species any good by an unknown pathegen running through my tank.....

I am hoping that this may well have been the problem, i know this is little solice Bill and does not sound like a very educated guess, however this is a scenario I have seen many times before and nothing else happens later. If you want to make sure of disease problems, a couple of doses of Pimafix is quite inert and safe and is relatively effective against gram negative bacteria. Make sure your mineral levels are up (a GH of 100 plus) and add salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons up to 1 teaspoon per gallon. I would also not normally combine Mehtylene blue and Erythromycin since both are very hard on nitrifying bacteria and Erythromycin in particular is primarily gram positive which rules out about 80% plus of aquatic pathogens. I will think on this Bill, but I still am hopefull that all will be fine my friend for your other fish. Carl

Any news today Bill as to how your other fish are looking? I cannot think of much more other than adding salt, maybe Pimafix, and checking water parameters. Stronger medications could be used preemptively, but I personally do not like to throw in anti- bacterial medications inadvertently (I do recommend this when the question involves anti-parasite medications) Carl

Sorry for your loss Bill. I'm sure the rst of your fish will be ok though. Maybe it was just this fish's time. Don't be too hard on yourself.

all the others are still looking great today...so no problem there. but i went to get rid of the snooks corpse today and i did notice something that i didnt notice during the necropsy. his bottom lip was quite red. internal bleeding on his face i imagine. i am thinking he may have gotten spooked by the vieja and did a face plant into a rock or the side of the tank. it may be a long shot....but all his organs seemed in perfect condition.

This certainly could be the case, either way as each day passes and every other fish is fine, the more it looks like a case of an indivual fish being harassed/spooked by another, with possible underlying weakness.
