I went to Petsmart today because I had a coupon and I thought I'd use it to get some carbon for my filter. They keep their betta display right by the door and I always have to look (even though I'm telling myself not to) and see what's there. They only had about 5 females there and one was really small and cute and I wanted to rescue her from cup life. But when I looked closely, she wasn't breathing very well and I picked up the cup and she just kind of floated to the bottom. Plus her fins were pretty clamped up. I felt bad, but I passed on her, then spotted 2 others that were very pretty and looked healthy. I couldn't decide which one to get, so I got both!!

I haven't completely figured out what to do with them yet. Right now I have them in the 5 gal. I will either put them in the 30 gallon (and return Sally my other female to it as well), or move them to the 10 gallon with Sally and 6 white clouds. I also have 3 platies in the 10, but I could move them to the 30. Too many options, but I have time to think about it. I am also open to suggestions, lol. Need to make sure neither of them are sick first. Plus, it's getting late and I am sleepy!
They're both veiltails. One is a light reddish and the other is a pale pale pink, almost white with a blue tint to her fins. Very pretty. Pics coming soon. I didn't have a light on them today, so give them some time to settle in a bit.
Is it just my Petsmart, or do all big box stores only sell veil tail females? I'll have to notice what the regular lfs sells next time I'm there. It's hard there though, because they keep their females way high up on top of their tanks...

Aww. They sound really cute!! Reminds me of my femla betta Dot. She is very cute. She has red dots on her fins and has big black eyes and is pure white. Another cute one I have that is one I bred that is partially crimpled. (has trouble swimming upward sometimes) But when she wants food, she jumps and jumps a good 2 1/2 inches out of the water for the food even if it's already in the tank. lol She tries to get imaginay food from the air. lol I keep my tank covered to avoid her jumping out along with my other jumping bean females.

Wow, she's a good jumper. I haven't had any problems with Sally jumping around. She's pretty laid back. Finn isn't much for jumping either. But Jasper would jump trying to get food too.
We'll see how these 2 new ones are. Now that they are settling in a little, they occasionally snip at each other when they are nearby. Hopefully they'll get their differences sorted out quickly, lol.

What's funny with my fish jumping is once I had a female betta that was in a 2 1/2 gallon with a divider and a male betta on the other side of the divider. I think she thought it was feeding time because she jumped but she accidently landed on the same side of teh didvider as the male who went on to chase her. lol I still have the fish that jumped like that too. She is my oldest betta now. I've had her 1 1/2 years and her name is Drift. She has a daughter who is even more jumpy for food named Crash. She is somehwat handicappe because she can't swim upward very well but she jumps every night whne I feed her! Actually, so do the rest of my female bettas in the tank with her. lol I didn't train them to do that. I think they learned it from each other!

Although I do not know this for a fact, most large importers only import veil tail Bettas, and since PetsMart prefers these larger importers, this is generally all that is available to them. Generally independent Aquarium Stores will buy from many small importers/breeders, however this takes time (and more paper work) for large chains where they often find sticking with one or two suppliers that can provide the "bread & butter fish" is easiest for them. I do know Poseiden Aquatics provides fish for Walmart and PetsMart in the West and that I have rarely seen other than VT Bettas there (I was just there on last Friday)
BTW, congrats on your new family members ;D

That's a shame that they only do VT's. Petsmart does sell Crowntail males too, but either they don't stock as many or they sell faster because I've only ever seen a couple of them. They are more $$ than VT's, so they probably only stock a few. Jasper was a CT and I bought him at a big box. But just think of what they are depriving their customers of by only selling a couple varieties!

My new pink betta is definitely turning into a dominant snot. The red one's tail fin has taken a little bit of a hit. Not severe, but noticeable. Do you think that if I put them into the 30, they'd be ok? There should be enough room there for the 2 of them. There are lots of hiding places. I will probably wait at least a few more days, just to be sure they are not sick, I've only had them since Tuesday afternoon.

This seems to be a good idea, are there any fish in the 30 that would be a potential problem? Carl

My female bettas always fight when I first put them in,. That is why I always keep 4 or more together. Otherwise one can get injured or very stressed from being picked on. That's just my opinion of course. I've had some nicer females that get along in pairs of twos.

I don't think there would be any problems with the other fish. I've got 6 celebes rainbows, 2 head and tail light tetras, 1 cherry barb, 1 SAE, 1 flying fox, and 1 cory (he's still alive!) Everyone in there gets along great from what I can tell.
I am thinking that I might get a couple more females like Renee mentions. That way either Pinky's aggression can get spread around or I'll get one that's even snottier than her to show her who's boss. That's a couple weeks down the road though.
It will be nice to get a little bit of color in the 30 again. Other than my cherry barb, it's all black, white and silver fish in there since I took out the platies!

Fish is about all I could handle. I would hate to clean up fur and poo and whatever else from a land animal.
I'm going to have to move the pink one out tomorrow, if not tonight. She has been pretty relentless in her mean-ness to the red one. I want to leave the red one in so that her fins can heal up. Not sure what to do after that.

Putting the two with more female bettas or even moving other to a commounity tank with many other fish will probably help level out the agression. But if you're leaving the white one and adding the pink one to the bigger tank, that's good too. It'll help the white fish (sorry i forgot her name) have time to recover.

The pink/white fish (I've been calling her Pinky - not very creative) is the one that is being mean. So I've definitely moving her to the 30 gallon today. Poor Red betta (again, not very creative with the names, am I) is looking pretty rough. They both seem very healthy (aside from Red's fins), so I'm crossing my fingers that it's safe to move the mean one to the community. I am going to put some MB in the bucket for Pinky to soak in while I acclimate her just to be on the safer side.
One Red is healed up, I guess I'll move her to the 30 also and hope that there is enough space and other fish to keep her safe from Pinky's wrath. Definitely should have thought all this out before I bought them, but oh well!

Whoops, I mixed them up. I was thinking of the one you called Pinky as being red when it was actually the more whitish one.

yeah, it is a little confusing! I'm thinking of changing Pinky to just Pink, like the singer P!nk. They definitely have similar attitudes!
