I put the babies in a 10 gal 11-29-08, theirs 20 of them in there, plus 4 rather large snails. Have been checking the water. The ammonia is going up to.50. OK question is...Is there a way to keep from sucking the babies up? I have used media from my 30 gal to start the tank out also. Thanks folks, these are my first babies...Can ya tell? ;D

You can siphon VERY slowly using air line tubing (which is what I have done in the past with many fry rearing tanks), OR you can use a regular vacuum and simply place a fish net on the dischage side in a bucket you are draining the water into. Others may ideas as well, but these are two methods I have used. Carl

You could try putting pantyhose over the intake of the gravel vacuum and hopefully not suck them up to begin with. I'd be really careful when removing the pantyhose to make sure nobody was stuck to it when you went to take the vacuum out of the water. BTW, I've never actually tried this, it's just an idea that struck me. Good luck!

If you have a sponge filter,. It won't suck the babies up. Pantyhose also works. lol Also, there may be something sold at your local petstore that you can put over the filter intake. I actually have something like that from Petsmart. I sometimes put it over my subemersible filters to keep guppy from from being sucked up. Hope that helps!

i would do nothing if your hose is large enough....if they happen to get sucked through the syphon....they will land uninjured in the water bucket....

I put a fine mesh net over the intake of the siphon in the tank so they don't get the roller coaster ride into the bucket. I watch it closely and if any fry get too close, I place my thumb over the outflow into the bucket so the siphon action stops. Then, just shake the hose a little to scare them away from the intake. Biggest thing is to just be careful doing it and you will be fine. John

I have 35-40 little sunshine peacock babies in a 10 gallon...I just use the regular gravel vac. I start with it at the top and work my way down carefully to the bottom...They will run to the other side of the tank. I then just clean normally and I just make sure to check my bucket to be sure I didn't get any, but I watch carefully as I vacuum.

Thanks people ;D They pretty much did run to the other side, all tho one did end up in the bucket. It is safe and sound in the tank now. Sheesh all they are is little eyes with small tails. If it wasn't for the eyes I would never see them!
