I doubt the CPD's would stop your shrimp population. I started out with 9 shrimp last year and I had the CPD and 4 or 5 white clouds. I'm down to 2 white clouds and the CPD, and I've probably got around 40 shrimp! There's a pretty small window of time when the CPD could eat baby shrimpys since a CPD's mouth is so little. Besides, if you have gravel in your tank, the baby shrimp spend most of their time hiding out in it and the fish wouldn't be able to get to them. Another great place for baby shrimp to hide is java moss. If you can get some of that and grow it on a rock or on the gravel, that would be helpful too. I've got a nice little mat of moss growing in my tank. Check it out. There's always shrimp hiding in it and digging around in it for food. It's a great thing to have in a shrimp tank.

Beautiful picture! I love the grass-like aquatic plant (java moss?) under the shrimp in the picture! I think that shrimp make great additions to a tank!

Yeah Renee, it's java moss. It makes a great hiding place for tiny shrimp and harbors all kinds of snacks for all the shrimp. The downside is that if you don't clean it occasionally it can become a nitrate factory because of all the mess it traps. When I clean it, I always have to be on the lookout for shrimp getting sucked up with the dirt.

Hi babygeige.
BTW, I forgot to say how sorry I am for you for your CPD losses. They seem to be such beautiful fish. I can't locate any LFS in my area (Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.) that carry them (let alone know what they are!). You're so lucky to be able to get some at one of your LFS. It seems like the prices might be coming down-- is this only an impression (and dream)?
I forgot to ask you: Do you think they would be OK with Cardinal tetras? My Cardinals seems rather fiesty, at least with each other (no other fish in the tank, right now). I wonder if they would be too much for the CPD's. I've had White Clouds in the past and I know those guys are laid back.

It might help at your lfs to ask about Galaxy Rasboras. That's what the CPD's were initially called when they were discovered, but after they were scientifically described, they were changed to danios. A lot of places, including my lfs, still call them Galaxy Rasboras.
As to pricing, when I bought mine, I believe they were 7 or 8 bucks a piece. I know they were even more when they were first discovered, but they are supposedly easy to breed, so they're being raised in captivity in greater #s so their price has dropped quite a bit. I saw them at my lfs not too long ago, but didn't think to check the price.
I'm not sure how Cardinals would be with CPD's. I've never had Cardinals. They're a little bit bigger than CPD's, which might be a problem. On the other hand, if you have a healthy number of CPD's so they could stick together, it may deter the cardinals from bothering them. Plants for shelter would help too. I have seen my white clouds chase the CPD in the past, but no damage was ever done. And I've seen him dish some back at them as well! They don't seem to harass each other anymore. I guess they've accepted the fact that he's not going away and now he hangs with them all the time.
Someone else might have an idea of how well they'd get along though. Sorry I can't advise on that point!
You've really made me want to go get some of them now! I just put a little angel fish in there for a while, but when he moves out, I'm definitely going for more CPD's. I hope you'll be able to find them at some point. They're real gems.

Hi babygeige. When I was going to one of the LFS to get some medicine, I was looking at some long-finned White Cloud Mountain Minnows and was sooo surprised to see this little itty bitty female CPD in the tank with them. At first, I thought she was a fry from another Danio because she was all of 1/2" long, maybe less (little cutie). I asked the guy working there if he knew the price, but he didn't even know what he was looking at. He said he would ask the store owner if they would put a price on it. He figured it accidentally came with the White Cloud shipment (What an accident!). I hope they don't know what they're dealing with... hehehe Anyway, I can't put any new fish in the tank until I'm done treating an Ich outbreak, which is another week and a half or so.... We'll see if she lasts in the store that long! Nicole

That's funny! It'd be nice if she was there waiting for you when you're ready!

Hi babygeige. Unfortunately, I went back about 3 days later and she was gone. To boot, they were ready to give her to me if she was still there! They had never heard of the CPD/Galaxy Rasbora. Of course, I didn't tell them that that's what she was... Maybe she didn't make it? Nicole

That's too bad! I bet someone saw her and snatched her up, especially if they were willing to give her away since they didn't know what she was. I bet they'd kick themselves if they found out she was a CPD!
