I had this film in my 10 gallon when i decided to try going without carbon. It took me a while to figure out how to get rid of it. Eventually I just threw the carbon in the filter just out of curiosity and poof, away it went! I guess there just wasn't enough filtration going on.

Maybe try increasing filtration. Bubblers also work well. A test kit is also a good idea. Especially when your tank is cycling, you want to know the levels of things suhc as nitrite and ammonia which are very toxic to fish. I'm afraid I'm not sure about the neon tetra. Are there any other symtoms it's showing?

could be Saprolegnia - have seen this all too often lately, mostly on tetras - could be the result of an injury but lately I'm thinking tetras in general get this often - probably wrong there - isolation baths in meth blue and maybe salt in the tank might help.....I'm not the disease guy - sorry

It's kind of hard to see... Are you referring to his mouth? A medicated bath is a generally safe way to treat fish without adding medications to the tank, although this does not take the place of medication regimine in serious systemic infections. In this fish' case I do not see a serious problem (I may be missing something that you see). This article has more about medicated baths in section #9: Aquarium Disease Prevention; Medicated Baths, section 9Carl

Yeah, it's right on his chin its like two bubbley things on his face, and it is on 2 of the other fish, and i struggled to get a good picture lol. I used to have 2 big angelfish in there... and the one died before I noticed what was wrong, and the other one died after I treated for the wrong thing... I'm not sure if I got rid of the disease completely, so this may be what is on my tetra's. The two angels I had before had fluffy cotton like fungus on their fins, and it was really hard to see on my white angelfish because it kind of blended in. I don't want this to continue in the tank, is there anything I could put in there to help the issue?

i haven't read all of the comments here, But the one you asked about the HYDRO sponge filter? GET it!!! it is awesome, and from what my husband says, it puts him to sleep at night, he said it is a soothing sound. I don't ever hear it, unless TV and every thing else is off, But my tank has really been much better since I bought it from Carl, doesn't get cloudy, never even looks dirty, fish are very happy.... I have the HOB whisper filter with it also, but before I did that, I had the air bubbler with it..although the sponge filter agitates the water pretty good

You may have a sporozoan infection in the tank, where prevention is the best cure. The medicated baths I noted earlier are a first step, & I strongly recommend this. As well, you may have Neon Tetra Disease which is caused by a sporozoan, however the Tetra in your pic does not clearly represent this disease IMO. In tank treatments would include Medicated Wonder Shells or ParaGuard & MetronidazoleOther recommendations include UV Sterilization, water changes, make sure your GH is over 100 ppm. Carl

Just want to say the medicated wonder shells and MB baths have saved a couple of my fish!!! The regular wonder shells help also as I have nasty water where I live! Good luck with your fish,

Kassidi, if you still haven't ID'd the oily film on the water, it could be from hair spray if you sometimes fix your hair in the same room as your tanks. Just a thought. 8
