I ran across an argument online about using thread sealing tape on PVC/plastic fittings. The argument was that the thread tape can warp and distort the threads when tightened...and actually causes a situation where leaking can happen. It was recommended to use a non hardening thread sealer. What I could not find was a product that was aquarium safe as I had read that some of these sealants contain oils.
Admittedly, I've always used thread tape on my tank fittings. I'm not saying it was always the best thing but I never knew of an alternative. I thought I'd open this one up for discussion. I'm certainly willing to do anything to avoid leaks of any sort....given I rent LOL

I've never conducted a comparison study here, I simply accepted what my mentors showed me when it came to pipe connections.
This said, I've used Teflon Tape for decades and have never witnessed a problem. However on a few occasions, I've forgotten and I only found out when the connection leaked later on (as well as being brought on to a new client to fix connections and find no Teflon Tape was used).

I only have leaks when I don't use tape... that said, when I tape up, I don't know if I'm just having to use more tape to adjust for warped barbs, because I do know there's been some times I've used tape and still had a leak, so I just used more tape. The known hardening thread sealer sounds handy actually. Sounds quicker.

Great points by all. If I knew of a product that was aquatic life safe I'd probably try it. The only real threaded taping I need to do as of now is with my UV sterilizers. I'm getting ready to buy another two Vectons to cover my last two tanks and I'd be willing to try a non hardening thread sealer if I could find a safe one..
