I've had various small aquariums throughout my life, and I will say this: if I knew then what I know now .. well, we all know how that goes! Sometimes I can't believe the fish I had as a kid (70's) lived as long as they did. After a 20+ year hiatus from fish keeping, other than a couple Betta's in unfiltered bowls (what did I say about learning!) I've set up a 10 gallon tank .. ironically enough, for my daughters Betta that she had in a 1 gallon filtered tank. It was surviving but certainly not thriving, so I felt the need to intervene.
The tank has been set up since mid-March 2017, and houses the Betta (Wilber) three Harlequin Rasbora's, three Otto cats, and a lot of young Bloody Mary shrimp. I am running two #2 ATI sponge filters (just added a second one because of the little red critters) and all is well with the water. As time passes, I will thin the shrimp herd by donating them to my local fish store.
It's not a big system, but it's fun watching all its inhabitants live and thrive. I believe I'm doing things right (especially with sponge filtration) but look forward to continually learning new things, and this site looks like a nice place to do so. So hello .. glad to meet everyone!

Thanks guys .. I’m going to try Indian almond leaves for the Shrimp and see how that goes. We’ll see how they like them/biofilm. Already getting a nice brown hue to the water.
