So my betta has had issues since the day I got him. Initially it was fin rot, which he still has, but eventually that slowed down to where his caudal fin is neither deteriorating or healing. While that happened that is when I noticed anal fin was starting to deteriorate and quite rapidly. It had the classic signs of rot, with the fin just vanishing and there was red at the tips of some of his fins. Eventually he lost a chunk of his anal fin up to his body. This is where the fungus comes in. At first I didn't see much of anything but I started to see white. I thought maybe the fin was healing and growing back but eventually that white turned bigger and it started to look like a spore. A spore growing out of my poor betta fish. So on 9/17/17 I decided to do his tank with Kanamycin, and that's is when I stumbled onto this amazing website and saw that a combination of Furan 2 and Kanamycin would be more effective along with methylene blue baths. But I didn't start the combination of meds and the baths until 9/18. So that was my routine, dose the tank with the meds and bathe him once a day for 20 minutes. By Wednesday I saw that he no longer had the spore on his body, I looked and found it on the ground of his tank so I am assuming it dislodged itself, which was awesome. Unfortunately I think I am starting to notice a regrowth of the spore in that same spot. Yesterday, 9/21, was his last full day of meds. Today, 9/22, is water change day but if the spore is coming back then I don't know what to do. He has been on so many medications, but despite that he is still very active and alert. I don't know if maybe the substrate or aquarium itself has this fungus and I need to throw everything out and start from scratch? I know at this point his cycle in the tank is definitely shot, so from that stand point to I don't know if I should keep dosing his tank because I'm sure part of the problem is the water quality. He is in a 5 gallon tank with a sponge filter and heater that keeps the water at 78 degrees. There are only two fake silk plants and a couple of catappa leaves currently in the water with him. Here is a current picture I took of him showing the growth that has returned and I just know from before that this is how the spore started before it became bigger: imgur.com/2QgPRsi
So please feel free to ask me any questions, I'll answer them to the best of my ability. I just do not know where to go from here as I don't want to keep stressing him with baths and medications, but if this spore is returning then it looks like I might have to. Thank you for reading!
