My pond has been set up for a couple weeks now with three goldfish. Some algae is starting to build up.y question is, what kind of bottom feeder etc can I add to the pond? (It's a 50 gallon) Typically, you don't want to add any bottom feeder to the pond, as they can't handle winters in the pond. If you add something like a pleco, it would have to be moved inside for the winter or a heater in the pond. Assuming it gets cold for your winters. Providing the pond more shade will help. There's algae fix at the pond store or remove it by hand. My experience is that algae eating fish don't do that good anyways.

Algae is always going to be there in a normal healthy pond. However with optimal filtration and a UV Sterilizer, you can control it quite well (both algae on the bottom/sides or in the water column. As Devon noted where are no good algae control fish for ponds. Snails might eat some, but again adequate filtration and UV Sterilization (with a good UV Sterilizer) is your friend her I would definitely consider a Veggie/Bog filter if you do not have one. Coupled with a good UV Sterilizer such as the AAP Advantage or Vecton, algae growth should be minimal Here area couple articles I would suggest: www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2007/03/pond-veggie-filters.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/ClearPond.htmlCarl

I second Carl's suggestion of a UV. I've had terrible luck with plant-based filters - my pond really isn't built for it and floating plants get destroyed by my monster fish. So my only real defense against algae is my UV sterilizer. I posted this pic in another thread but I think it does a good job of showing just how effective proper UV sterilization can be. The rocks on the bottom are about 4 feet down, so as you can see the water is REALLY clear.
