We did our 5-year clean on the pond today. Completely drained all the water, power washed away some of the algae, then refilled it. I added Prime and salt in the appropriate amounts. I noticed very early on that the remaining algae spots on the pump and pond sides were turning red when exposed to the new water. Now the whole pond appears to be tinted red. Does the algae just turn red when it dies or is it something more serious?

Well, the water is crystal clear this morning. There's still some dull red patches on the liner but it dawned on me last night that several types of filamentous algae in my 55G tank would turn red when exposed to Excel or peroxide. I'm fairly certain at this point that the same thing happened here and it's nothing to worry about.

Seems you solved the problem before I ever got online. Hope your pond does well the rest of the summer Carl

So would you agree with my assessment? FYI, sold two 2-year old fish yesterday that were 15" long and weighed almost 10 pounds.

Yep. The were born two summers ago in the pond. We sold the two 2-year olds and 6 fry from last summer. The fry from last summer were anywhere from 4-6". The two 2-year olds were like 15-16" and weighed almost 10 pounds each. That's how much of a difference one year made.

How do you get you're Koi out when you want to sell them? Drain and catch?

Yep. We use a pop-up swimming pool to house them in the interim. It's quite the exercise because this year the smallest fish was 3 inches and the largest was almost 30 pounds. We had to use 3 different net types LOL

Wow that is some good growth which most likely happened only during the warmer months. Definitely a sign of a very healthy pond! Carl
