I have lost all 9 fish in just 4 days! I had noticed one of my cichlids had ( dry skin) he was flashing or scratching, I took him out and put him in a blue bath, about 2 days later it died, I changed half the water, changed filters, cleaned the decorations. About two days after that two more fish had the dry skin and scratching, checking the water perameters everything was ok KH a little off but not to bad. PH a little low. Then one day I woke up and both were dead and all the other fish were lathargic, hanging out at the top and some flipping upside down but still trying to hang on. Water perameters still not bad! but I changed water another 25% and using Prime and a little salt. Today all I have left is my algea eater, and he is moving around alot.. kinda like he is ansie. I did check my water perameters and today they are GH 180 KH 0 PH 7.0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 80 Some one tell me what I need to do to get my tank stable again, Its a 75 gallon, HOB filter and a sponge filter 1 algea eater now.

I probably should have mentioned also that a couple of the fish looked a little blue around the gills and head area, like not enough oxygen, but they didnt act like they weren't getting enough, they just didn't eat much and swam closer to the top. I have been keeping fish for quite a while now but I just cant figure this out... smh

Interesting. What's up with that KH... I bet if you track your pH closing, its swing through out the day and night.

Besides what Devon noted as per KH which I would suggest at at least 50 ppm (or 3dKH), is if you introduced any new fish of late? Did you notice rapid gill movement or discoloration of the fish in general like maybe a faint rust color? The symptoms somewhat correspond to Velvet Treatment with ParaGuard followed by Medicated Wonder Shells (or even just Medicated Wonder Shells). I didnt notice any fast gill movement, and yes with the discoloration, wasnt really rusty looking but like a purplish. 1 small fish, which he died after my verterian fish, I don't know what happened to the KH. that is the lowest I have ever seen it. I have been using wondershells not medicated because like I said it happened fast. in 4 days I have only my algea eater left. and somedays his color looks normal and sometimes he turns light gray in places.... So will this Paraguard fix the water or should I just empty the whole thing again and start over since I only have 1 fish left and who knows if he will even make it. I read the artical on velvet I don't think that was it. of course I'm not a professional or anything by far but the only symptom that sounds right is the dieing fast, and I did the MB bath's and the article on velvet says they stayed at bottom and clenched fins this was the exact opposite. no rapid gill movements they didn't even open their mouth hardly, they didn't eat..... IDK... What should i do guys?

My best guess is there was some pH swings in the tank causing immunity issues and whatever the disease was took over. If you have 0KH coming from the tap, I'd recommend using SeaChem Alkalinity to get it to 3-5 KDH. Then the wild pH swings will stop and wearing on immunity will stop. With one fish, it's tempting to start over...
Sorry for the issues.

I have ordered all the things you have suggested, just waiting on them now. Carl or Devon what is the perfect water parameters? I am just going to start over but I want to make sure the water is right before I put any more fish in there. My algea eater seems to be doing just fine, But in my experience with them, they are very Hardy fish anyways.

What fish are you planning to keep as per "perfect" water parameters Obviously ammonia and nitrites should be very close to zero and nitrates under 50 ppm There are some simple suggestions as per other aspects of fish chemistry in this part of the "Aquarium Chemistry" article: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumKH.html#suggestionsCarl

Yup, then most of the time you need a 3-5 dKH and like a 5 dGH.
