Hello Everyone,
I lost my 3+ year old betta tonight to severe fin rot. I treated him with salt (in hospital tank) and Maracyn 2 in the main tank over the corse of 2 months. It's a 5 gallon with Aquaclear filter and with live plants and driftwood. Today I did a 100% water change and replaced the carbon and biomax cartridges in the filter as well as adding stress coat. He was only in there for 6 hours or so before he passed. The tank was nicely cycled before the 100% water change. I did not replace the sponge in the filter.
I'd like to get another betta for the tank but want to make sure that it's not contaminated when I do.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Bleach left circulating will get everything, especially if you stir the substrate. Depending on water volume, a good amount of Seachem Prime with a big water change will make it safe for fish again. Do a few water changes with lots of extra prime (10mL per gallon or so, 100 times the dosing to remove chlorine). That's about the density of Prime I use to get the bleach out of Purigen when regenerating. Once done, you'll obviously need to cycle the aquarium again, I use clear ammonia, but fish food and other methods are just as functional.
