So, I never got around to properly decommissioning it (surprise, surprise), but regardless, the solution was two Eheim quick disconnects, so I can just briefly back-flush the system by reversing the flow. Easy as pie. Any pictures or videos of this in action or of the cleaning process? Carl

I would have to do it again, just for the sake of taking pictures. Here is a link to an album showing the chiller with the eheim quick disconnects. photos.app.goo.gl/hTcm0GRbrQKKTCr03the bottom line is, back flushing the system is now a matter of stopping the pump, reversing the two hoses, and then restarting, and just letting it run for a half a day. Meanwhile my intake problem has been resolved also... I retrofit my Hydor 180 GPH pump (4 watts), with a patch for a window screen, cut into about a dime-size circle, which fit inside the native screen, without interfering with the filter, but it essentially prevents things like MTS from entering the circulation of the chiller, so I foresee not having those problems any more. There was not enough room in this tank (29G) to rig up another sponge filter by way of an intake - that might work for a larger tank.
