Peggy,
Have you looked into how many Walmarts are selling these fish? We have a super Walmart here and for the last 3 years or so, the fish department has been closed. Before they were closed, I never remembered them selling puffers.
Another point, I know Petco sells these fish, I never see warning or care guide for them. I've personal purchased the fish with no information about the toxin. Best care information was given, but that was by an employee...

Hi Devon,
Thanks for addressing these 2 issues.
First, Walmart Headquarters is difficult to penetrate. They claim to not have knowledge of which stores carry them. I work with individual managers and its been very successful. Unfortunately I can only travel so far and I rely on others to tell me where they find them. I am always seeking volunteers to copy my press release which can be found on my website, and hand deliver it to the local managers who carry Puffs. Volunteers can contact me by email or through my FaceBook group, or call with the name of the manager and store address. Walmart has asked me to alert them to the stores that carry puffs. This tedeous job has barely scratched the surface. All I need is a few good men/women. I never give up hope.
Second,Tetrodotoxin was a godsend to us at Puffer Corps! I campaigned for months trying to appeal to Walmart to stop sales due to starvation and lack of care, with little results. Then a local volunteer brought it to my attention asking if green spotteds carry the deadly neurotoxin. We did our homework, drew up the press release, and Bingo! Managers suddenly started listening. My worst enemy Quality Pets has become my best allie just by their shoddy business practices. They are in constantly in violation of their contract, as well as Marineland, who furnishes and "maintains" the tanks. I've taken the position as consignee to Walmart, pointing out these infractions, sick fish, and poison health risk. As for Petco, The difference between Walmart and Petco is Walmart is a retail store and Petco is a pet store. The Petco level of skill is supposedly higher and is specified for animals. I personally think that fish DO NOT belong at petco. Fish are not animals and require completely different evvoronment and skills. In time I would like to take on every single corporation that benefits from exploiting fish that are netted and shipped to our country. For now Walmart will be my focus, and I invite you to start your own organization, and I'll happily stand shoulder to shoulder with you.
Please tell me if I've left anything out. I a very dear friend died this week and havent slept much.

Oh and I wish I could say that all LFS's inform new puffowners not to lick the fish. I hope Walmart just quits them instead of posting warnings. That would be a dream. So check your Walmarts and name names. Thanks!

Please tell me if I've left anything out. I a very dear friend died this week and havent slept much. Sorry to read this, my condolences! One aspect of retail fish care I have noted is that while I will agree that most Walmart employees and PetCo employees have little fish care knowledge or worse have been fed a line of BS that they then spew out to unknowing customers, there are also the occasionally knowledgeable and compassionate employees at these locations Carl

You wouldn't believe the insanity I've seen dealing with Quality Pets Inc. The salespeople, the drivers, all argue with me, insisting that Puffs eat flakes. They even insist that they EAT LETTUCE. I put it to them to explain to me Why, if puffers do eat flakes, ARE THEY ALL DYING OF STARVATION??? I know that they eat algae in juveniles stages to produce the texodotoxin, and some continue into adulthood, but in all my experience with 300+ rescued puffs, less than 5% actually swallowed. In order to fairly substantiate QP's claim , I subjected 1 rescue group a week to the flake test. In order to give the claim an advantage, I chose hungry puffs who had not seen real food in some time. Our older residents were completely disinterested in flakes after weeks of dining on the shelter menu of shrimp, mussels, blood worms and an occasion lobster tail. I subjected new evacuees as they were being admitted the hospital wing of the shelter. Though they were weak and emaciated they refused them, or spit them out. Sadly, many are in such advanced stages of malnutrition that their digestive systems have begun to shut down, and they are unable to swallow, but those who could, spit them out. The experiments made me feel like some cruel nazi Dr Mengela and so I discontinued the exercise after 4 weeks. I thought it must feel like a cruel joke to them, to finally arrive at sanctuary only to be given flakes again. There is nothing so tragic and heartbreaking than to see such a proud majestic predator as the Puffer Fish beaten down into such a state, that they will eat goldfish food. So then I asked QP Why are there are so many dead puffs in Walmarts tanks, They DENY THAT THE PUFFERS ARE DYING!!! *head exploding*

Before your head explodes, there is one major positive and that is you are educating many others about this issue. This includes how QP does business. I appreciate how you think of me as an expert, but you have also taught me too, and your experiments are very educational for both me and others So thank you for the education Carl

I thank Walmart for an education in greed and the depths of human cruelty. I can halfway agree to this. Walmart does just provide what people want. As in each item purchased, is a vote that Walmart should keep stocking that item. So, we feed Walmart to do the things they do.

However what you are doing is educating persons, so then there will be less excuses for other to vote with their pocket books It ceases to be an excuse once informed. This sort of reminds me of a persons I have helped, but then turned around and purchased at Amazon or eBay only to not get the same exact piece of equipment and then have trouble with it not doing the job intended. In one recent incident, the person after asking us to match the price for something that was not the same quality, went ahead and re-purchased again even after our help and advice and having the product fail. We've talked about it before here. I live in a heavily entrenched UAW area. Those people all lost their jobs when their employer moved the majority of the manufacturing to Mexico.
They detest the Mexicans for taking their jobs. They resent the executives of their former employer because they're all rich.
Yet they continue to religiously hit the Black Friday sales at Walmart, completely oblivious to the fact that CONSUMER BEHAVIOR put all of their misery in motion.
It's an impossible drum to beat, unfortunately. People want everything on the cheap and then they want to complain about all the garbage that comes with it.
Walmart shouldn't be allowed to sell fish. The conditions at my local store are beyond disgusting. What's worse is that they treat their employees pretty much the same way. Everything in the store is a commodity, including the people in it.

Is this how to respond to your comments? I have no idea what I'm doing here. LOL Anyway, I entirely disagree that Walmart will continue to stock puffers if they are rescued. I bought every single puffer that came to every Walmart within a 100 mile radius for 4 months and they QUIT SELLING THEM. The number 1 challenge I face is NOT dealing with Walmart, it's dealing with APATHY. I have recruited only a handful of volunteer Puffer Guardsmen to notify Managers. If only people would give Walmart a chance, they will find, as i did, real human beings who are interested in knowing this is happening. I CHALLENGE YOU. MR STROMEYER and MR DEVON and the rest of you mugs! Copy, and serve this document to Walmart managers. send me the name of the Manager and store address. I'll take it from there. This little blue haired old lady will Puffer Corps Press Release show you what it takes to move a mountain. I can halfway agree to this. Walmart does just provide what people want. This little blue haired old lady will Puffer Corps Press Release show you what it takes to move a mountain. I think it will depend upon each store manager. In some instances purchasing from a some entity may only further encourage such behavior. Think about buying up all the heroin from a local heroin dealer, likely this will only encourage him/her. On the other hand, with a good Walmart manager, as you noted this truly sent a good message. Unfortunately my experience of late in dealing with the miss-information I have fought against, it is an increasingly uphill battle when morals are considered. This is also why I will certainly continue to spread the word about puffers via this forum, social media, and my industry connections, however I have too many irons in the fire in my own battles dealing with often very personal attacks upon myself, all the while more and more persons utilize my free information to purchase elsewhere, resulting in last year my personal earnings were $8 per hour when my time was factored into the terrible net income I made. So adding battles with local Walmart managers is something I simply do not have the time or even the health for at this time (also our local Walmart does not even sell fish). Carl

Our Walmart doesn't carry fish and haven't for a few year now. That what I was saying. Petco does. I think this is a education issue, as the demand for the puffers is high. We just need to train people how to care for them. That also includes where they are being breed and held for distribution.
