Hello everyone, It seems that one of my disucs has developed, what I suspect is internal parasite. I noticed over that past week or so that he has keep himself separate from the rest of the the discus and his eyes look a little hazy. Today I noticed long white string of feces below him. None of the other 9 discus show any signs of distress and are very healthy. i dont know what has caused this being that my 170 gallon planted system stays at a constant 4 KH and 10 GH and 0 nitrates respectively. In addition a level 2 sterilization (at least i hope so anyway) and the temp fluctuates between 83.5 and 84.5 daily). My DOS (dissolved organic substance) reads around 348 ppm. Higher than what I would like but I'm sure there are alot of things contributing to that. And have two bags of purigen running. I only change 20 to 25% of the water weekly due to the 0 nitrates in the system. (seems that the plants suck it all up). In my opinion I believe that I have a very clean and stable system with good husbandry. Maybe these things just happen regardless. I am considering dosing meds but not sure which way to go with this being my first real time with an actual sick fish. I looked over Carl's diesease guide and couldnt find the exact answer, but I'm sure I missed it. I do have some Levamisole HCI on hand but was very hesitant to use it as a preventative; especially after talking with a local vet who initially discouraged me from using if there was no visible problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I doubt very seriously that this fish will eat at this time. He doesnt seem that interested in food but the rare times he attempted to eat he just spits it out. I noticed that you didnt suggest levamisole HCI. I do have 20 grams of it with instructions. Oddly that this would happen since I did do a preventive treatment about a month ago with Prazipro. I suppose treating the tank with just Metronidazole would do huh? I could use the Neomycin Sulfate in food but I'm afraid just the other Discus would eat it up. They never leave leftovers. Is there a plan B?

I did not suggest Levamisole because I have serious doubts this is a parasite, based not only on symptoms, but your history (unless I missed something). The likelyhood a parasite popping up ina fish you have had for some time, under the care you provide is remote. However internal pathogens only need for some sort of opportunity and these pathogens are usually present in healthy fish. As for as plan B, I honestly would be giving you a false hope to state in tank treatments would be very effective, but admittedly if this were my Discus, I would try too The best I can suggest is a hospital tank with Kanamycin (which is absorbed) along with correct size Medicated Wonder Shell for this tank Resources: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/MedicatedWonderShell.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/Seachem.html#kanaplexCarl

Maybe consider soaking the food into garlic juice. Minced garlic juice or SeaChem Garlic. It simulates appetite and boosts immunity. Since the other fish are doing ok, I have to think that the immunity is lower on this one fish.
Mix the meds in with the garlic food.

Hey Carl, I was able to get a hold of some KanaPlex, MetroPlex and Garlicguard locally and moved the fish into a hospial tank. I also have a medium and large medicated wondershell on hand. I guess I have two questions. First should I just dose the tank with Kanaplex and metroplex instead of putting it in food? Also do i use the medicated wondershell in conjunction with the other meds or as a followup treatment? I dont want to over medicate or kill him in this process. Thanks in advance . FYI I have him in a 20 gallon tank

The metroplex will not work in tank for the likely problem.
This along with the GarlicGuard is best in the food.
The Kanaplex would be used in conjunction with the Medicated Wonder Shell in a a Hospital tank

Did you use the Medicated Wonder Shell in conjunction with the Kanaplex? Carl

As for the Medicated Wonder Shell, I would keep a one present for 10-14 days, more so the later time Carl
