What size is the tank, and how much water does the background displace (something I never gave a thought to before)? What is a rough estimate of the cost to make one for the size tank you are using? Also, I've always wondered what it is like to clean/do tank maintenance around those kinds of backgrounds (especially if there is an algae outbreak) . Since it looks like it will negate using an HOB, how do you handle filtration (I am assuming the tank is glass and not acrylic, so drilling can't be done) and heating? I've always thought that if I was ever able to do an African cichlid tank, that I would like to use that kind of background (I saw some pre-fabricated ones listed somewhere a while ago, but don't remember where, and they were only available for really large tanks). I remember when I was a kid ( in the '60s ) you could get background inserts for 10G tanks that were "3-dimentional", but the only ones I remember seeing were of ocean scenes. Angelminx

Angelminx The tank is around 40gal, no idea how much it displaces, but it is no worse than filling a tank with décor and plants
Cost about $30 (I will only need to buy epoxy this time around, and wont use all I buy on just this tank)
Scrub with a toothbrush or treat with excel for algae, same as for other décor.
It is going to be running a canister filter, though I could use a HOB if I wanted. The tank is glass and could be drilled if required. The tank is also heated, the heater sits behind the background, same place the filter intake sits (or powerhead if being used)

Finished the background, tank is now up and running. I will eventually epoxy the BG, but for now the sealer that is on it will do The tank under standard T8 The tank under marine LEDs
