So I am planning to move my rainbow shark to a 55g and give him a few friends to swim with. I was thinking some barbs and maybe some danios. Any other suggestions for some good tank mates for the rainbow shark?
Thanks!

Any other suggestions for some good tank mates for the rainbow shark? Thanks! Amy I would either pack the tank or just put a handful of the same size and same agression. I have my shark with and angle and a Gourami. If the fish are smaller than the shark they will most likely be chased.

I have found Rainbow Sharks fickle, sometimes not a problem mixing with other fish, other times total terrors chasing many tank tank mates constantly. In other words, there is no clear right and wrong answer with these fish
The more fish, the less chance of any singling out of another tank mate.
As noted, Barbs, larger Danios, Gouramis, as well as Severums, Kribensis and some other mild tempered Cichlids might work

In several places I have read that rainbows do well with some loaches . What has been your experience?

I have seen Rainbow Sharks harass Clown Loaches Carl So loaches are not ideal..... I have to say the idea of having some really large fish to complement the schoolers and the shark is appealing (and one I had not considered!). Will the Severum get along fine with the barbs and danios as well? How many/male/female severum would you recommend getting? This of course leads to the question how many schoolers then? I don't have any experience with Severum, but I love and have kept many mbuna cichlids. I have read the short profile on the AAP website, but there wasn't a whole lot of info. concerning the community tank. Please share any experience you've had with them or direct me to any other resources that you think might be helpful. Thanks!

I had an albino rainbow shark ("Sharky" LOL!) when I was in college (I got him a couple years before) that was a real character. He was pretty good with my angels and cories (and my tetras, but I forget what they were at the moment) most of the time, but as he got a little older he was more territorial about his barrel (the one in my pictures of the 10G tank)...NO ONE was allowed near it--or at least show the slightest interest that might be interpreted as thinking about entering it. Otherwise he tended to be fine with his tankmates, even swimming around with them at times.
