Thanks Carl. Considering the rather large bio-load on my tank (see the pic), and the fact that this was a cold turkey cutover with only seeded ceramic rings - it's tough to complain. This would have been a lot dumber of a cutover without the continuous water change in the picture. Laziness is the mother of efficiency! I won't be fully happy with this until both ammonia and nitrites are consistently running at 0 (as per before the cutover). I will be truly ecstatic if it then begins to control my nitrates as well given the tall design. Sean.

I won't be fully happy with this until both ammonia and nitrites are consistently running at 0 (as per before the cutover). Ok colour me fully happy now... Ammonia and Nitrite are both running at dead zero now with only the FSB as the bio-filter. Mechanical is accomplished with filter floss as a pre-filter, and running on 2 maxi-jets. Levels are great and the tank is crystal clear. (doing a happy dance) Nitrate is running at about 25ppm with the continuous water change. Now to build 5 more of these things... 1 more for my 135g (redundancy), 2 for my 67g, and 2 for my son's 135g. Next up for sale will be my 2 Fluval 406s that I will no longer need! Sean.

When running correctly, a good size FSB Filter such as your DIY or a TMC 1500 can easily replace the largest canister filter monstrosity, often at a fraction of the cost!

Good luck on the rest of the project!

Hey Folks, So my nitrates have now dropped off almost completely. Repeated tests over the last several days show them running at or below 5ppm - barely measurable. Ammonia and Nitrite are both running at 0ppm.
For the nitrate drop - I'm not sure I'm willing to credit that to the tall FSB yet. Thoughts? It could be simply the removal of two canister nitrate factories giving my continuous water change a chance to actually flush out the nitrates. Maybe a bit of both...
Any way you slice it - the combination of the FSB and the continuous water change has transformed my tank into a virtually maintenance free environment. My maintenance now consists solely of swapping out a chunk of filter floss every week or 10 days. This has definitely enhanced the enjoyment level of running an aquarium for me. While I didn't mind the maintenance, it's tough to find the time some days.
Sean.

I know this is an older thread. I was wondering if any members are running this same type of setup?

I know this is an older thread. I was wondering if any members are running this same type of setup? Yes many are running FSB Filters, but as for DIY, this is the only working one I know of personally. This said, from what I can tell this is working very well so if you are DIY inclined, following this persons thread might be a fun project. Carl

I know this is an older thread. I was wondering if any members are running this same type of setup? woops. so sorry missed this question. I've seen a few people do DIY from the Facebook groups. If your just talking about a sand filter in general.. ya there's lot of people.
