Greetings All,
This is a thread I would like to see grow.... It is my fault the Columnaris took hold in my 75 gallon --- but my actions also may have prevented other conditions from happening. I wrote a "True Confessions" story in a different post, so won't repeat that here. I have seen horrible things happen to fish when there is a filter failure. If you don't want a story, just skip down to the steps. I actually have one Boesemani now that I rescued from a local pet store (two years ago) or he would be dead, too. I noticed there wasn't any flow on their HOB filter (AquaClear? --can't remember now what brand they had). They had just gotten in a new batch of rainbows and they were all hovered at the top - many had Ich (including the one I bought -- I kept him in a hospital ten gallon until he was Ich free. Now I can't tell who is who. I got this rainbow for $6.00 and I have one that looks identical that I paid $15.99. This rainbow has never presented with any illness in my care once the Ich spots dropped off). The associate did service the filter, but over the weekend, someone unplugged the filter and all fish died. That summer, I bought three rainbows from that national chain store - and I still have all three (I paid $4.50 for the turquoise and $6.00 for the yellow - both purchased the same day they arrived to the store)....the rest of theirs all died (when I bought mine, the others all had Ich - I am assuming partially due to low pH of 6.0. the two I bought - the turquoise and yellow - never did get Ich). The Ohio company where I buy most of my fish had a filter failure a couple weeks ago in their rainbow tank at headquarters.... many problems with the fish now. I won't buy any of those even if health issues improve. I have a good email relationship with their fish buyer (this company does like me -- grin). So.....Here is my NEW plan for a filter failure (I do have two filters on all aquariums and all but the hospital tank have circulation pumps).
1. Service filter and determine the problem (with my Rena, it was too dense of a foam pad.... much more dense than original foams). Of course, test all water parameters (in my case, all were right on target).
2. Do a 25% water change and watch fish for any problems. IF any problems present, do another 25% water change then treat accordingly. Use Wonder Shells to insure proper mineral balance (I didn't have Wonder Shells in August when this happened)
Note: I left off the step of increased oxygen though aerating buckets of water - and spray bar adding more oxygen.... This step would only be done if fish appear to NEED more oxygen.
3. This step will only be given in a private message. I just know it has been 100% successful for me..... and I know how you all don't like stories (laugh out loud).
4. This step will only be given in a private message..... then treat accordingly if any problems occur.
Do feel free to post your own steps on how to deal with a filter failure.
For a power failure? Go from tank to tank .... take out water and then pour back in slightly above the aquarium..... continue to do this until hubby comes home to start up the generator. Fortunately, I have only had to do this once.....One of these days, I will ask my husband to show me how to work the generator. We have been fortunate that we haven't lost power when we are away (prayer does work, I guess). Back in 2005, we were without power for over a week. I lost my Betta fish and my son's fish - then two cory cats and maybe one other fish (I was fish sitting his ten gallon as he couldn't have fish in his apartment.... It was that next summer when he bought the 75 gallon). We were finally able to get a generator (all stores were sold out for days) -- that evening, power was restored. Summer 2006, only days after we brought my son's fish home, we were without power for a week.... but that generator kept the fish happy (and us as we never lost our cable TV). We have only had to use the generator two more times after that (Summer 2012 two pet stores were without power over a weekend.... but my fish were all fine).
For those who do have a generator.... be a good neighbor -- run one cord over to your neighbor's house. Maybe this is why we never lose power while we are away?
Carl, if you have steps for this.... post the links.
