On August 5th I bought 2 Amano Shrimp...at least they are supposed to be Amanos, and do look like them. They were ~1" and 1 1/2" long. I recently read somewhere that they are only supposed to reach a maximum length of 1 1/2"; everything else I've read said 2" max. I was beginning to wonder if I'd lost the smaller one when I finally saw them both together on October 17th. I have only been able to get 3 pictures of them (which are also in my Amano Shrimp post), and none since the beginning of November. Here, again, are a couple of them (the 1st one is from September, the 2nd from November):
They are now ~2" long each, and on November 30th, I noticed that one, for sure, was berried--I never saw them both (their whole bodies) at the same time to be able to tell If I had 2 females, or one of each. Last night a few hours after the tank lights had been out I decided to take a peak at my Banjo Catfish, so I got out the flashlight. As I was looking around, I saw a small shrimp (maybe 1 1/4" long) walking towards the back right corner (the Amanos and Bamboo Shrimp like to hang out under the Rio's pre-filter there). It definitely was not a Ghost Shrimp (or my Bamboo Shrimp, who is ~ the same size as the Amanos) and it looked like an Amano Shrimp...BUT I only purchased 2! [The only shrimp I have ever purchased were Ghosts, Bamboo, and the "Amanos".] I know that larval Amanos need brackish-to pure saltwater to develop into their adult form, but other than a few days, starting from October 25, the only salt in the tank was Aquarium Salt at 1 T/5 gallons. This level was only in the water until my next water change ~ 1 week later, going down with subsequent water changes. I know I am not seeing things...I also saw both of the larger Amanos shortly afterwards, followed by the smaller one a few minutes later. How is this possible? Sorry I don't have pictures.
