Hi Devon,
I know the fish live longer with me than they would for the average customer. I overstock on purpose. It is so hard to pass up a beautiful rainbow fish. Many of the stores lose them if they are not purchased as they don't have enough big tanks. They do need plenty of room to swim. Often I will "rescue" (yes, buy) one that is in a smaller tank. Those sometimes don't live as long. The ones I buy young live the longest with me. Sadly, I recently lost a Kamaka that got slammed against the glass by one of the barbs. I wanted to take the barbs to my son summer 2013, but hubby wanted to keep them. Now they are way to big to go anywhere else.
(I know I wrote this before) In 2012, the local Jack's Pets closed....so I have to travel to buy fish. I bought the two tinfoil barbs at the Findlay store. I told hubby that would keep me from buying more rainbows as the barbs were get big.... Well, those barbs are HUGE now and I can honestly say, they did not keep me from buying more rainbows (I just did't buy as many more). I do only buy a rainbow when one dies....but I have so much more "fish inches" now. I really should photograph my barbs so you folks get see how big they are. They are about 11 inches long now (so could grow 2 more inches, but I doubt they will). When I bought the two bards, I also bought two more silver dollars -- since I assumed my son's silver dollars wouldn't last much longer. I still have my son's silver dollars that he bought in 2005 - so they will be ten years old soon.
