Greetings All,
I am just a "Wide Mouth Frog".....that ought to get you wondering. Actually, I woke up laughing this morning with that thought in mind. If you want to know the rest of that story.... that is for a later time.
Anyways....I had two African Frogs for a short time - more than likely Claw Frogs rather than true Dwarf. I did look up photos of both and they are identical (the images that come up, that is). Pet Stores sell Claw Frogs as Dwarf Frogs. I have seen the smaller true Dwarf frogs at another store. I only bought them for fun as I have many frog artifacts in my house - might as well have some in my tank. Two wire and beaded frogs from Zimbabwe sit on top of the 10 gallon.
I had one frog named JuJu (couldn't call it Judy) - and then bought another one named Jeremiah (Yes, "Jeremiah was an Bullfrog, was a good friend of mine" - Jeremiah represented my Dad - who loved to hear me tell the "Wide Mouth Frog" Folk Tale - which by the way actually originated in West Africa). My plan was always to give the frogs back to the pet store when they got too big for my ten gallon. They weren't expensive - actually were on sale when I bought them. We certainly did have a few laughs with them.
Jeremiah had a shorter life with me. When the associate netted him - he jumped out and went on a "road trip" around the store and then under the tanks. She was able to get him and said she would get me another one. I told her I wanted that one. That way, if anything happened to it, we would know why (didn't want them putting it back in the tank for another customer). Jeremiah did develop what looked to be mouth rot (no fungus growth - just some deterioration at his mouth). JuJu did make her trip to another store in the chain (one that had pH closer to mine). Bellefontaine store has pH of 8.4 (where I bought her) -- Sidney store is closer to 7.0.
JuJu loved to go fishing!! so I knew it was time for her to go. She was in an aquarium with small fish (Neon fish count was dropping - I would house the neons in my 10 gallon until they passed their 14 day guarantee. Then would move them to the 20 extra high). I had recently purchased a young YoYo loach and didn't want to risk losing him/her - so JuJu would go to the pet store my next trip.
On the morning of her departure, I went into the fish room (son's former bedroom) and lo and behold, the YoYo loach was dangling from her mouth!! I scolded her and told her to spit it out. When I netted her, the YoYo was able to escape. That YoYo is now nearly full grown - so a happy ending, indeed. JuJu was placed in a tank with other like size frogs so I assume she was happier, too. Since I wasn't positive the YoYo would make it, I did buy two more (which are still a little smaller). The first YoYo (which is a bit too aggressive) will be moving soon to my 20 gallon where there are two Burmese Border Botias (they ought to show him/her who's boss).
By the way.... calling the YoYo a YoYo because it is easier to type. I know its longer name....just so you know (chuckles). On another forum I was "called out" for not knowing my species. I didn't last long there because.... I am a Wide Mouth Frog....and they have snakes there that eat Wide Mouth Frogs. I am so sorry, but I am just having too much fun this morning laughing.
I don't care if you folks even read my "Tales"..... I have lots of long email "Fish Tales" that I have written to my son... and I always start them with "Just a funny....I don't care if you even read this".
Cheers!
