I finally got around to changing the bulb (for the 2nd time), etc., on my UV system. I got a couple of pics that I have to download, but didn't think of doing this until I was nearly done, so I don't have a couple of pics that I wish I did. The hoses didn't look as dirty once they were away from the tank, as they did when looking at them behind it. The quartz sleeve (1st time I've cleaned it) made it thru fine--it was less fragile than I thought it would be--so the replacement sleeve is still wrapped up tight and put away for safe keeping.
The outside of the sleeve, and the inside of the UV, were a "bright" orange-brown, which was easily wiped off of the sleeve, but I could only get a little off from the areas of UV that were visible (what can be seen when the hose-barbs are unscrewed)...I'm pretty sure the inside looks terrible, but I have no idea how to clean this area--or if I should even worry about it. As for the bulb, it was still working (I double-checked last night), but when I removed it, it looked like it had "burned out" or something (this is one of the pics I did take); I don't remember if it looked like that the last time or not (6 months ago), and was wondering if the brownish "slime" on the quartz sleeve had something to do with this or not (as I said before, this is the 1st time I cleaned the sleeve).
So far there is no leaking....however, when I "primed" the filter, I had spilled some of the water (it over flowed between the return and the funnel). I thought I had wiped the hose down, but can't remember for sure (there was water there when I checked for leaks the 1st time), so I gave that hose (and where it connects to the filter intake) a thorough wipe-down. I am keeping an eye on it, but so far have found no more water in that area (or anywhere that I can "easily" see).
I also cleaned the Rio 1000 (and rinsed its pre-filter) and the XP2. I rinsed the filtration foams and the Matrix, and replaced the micro filtration pads...boy did that water get dirty ... In fact, I originally removed ~ 2 1/2 gallons from the tank and rinsed out the pre-filter and did a preliminary rinse/"scrub" of the Rio in it and, because that water turned so dirty, I dumped it, and removed another 2 1/2 - 3 gallons for the XP2 foams/Matrix--that's the one I took a photo of. It looked black when I 1st looked at it, but when I took the pictures (with/without flash) I could see it was actually brown.
After I cleaned the XP2, I put 3 capfuls of Stability in the bottom before replacing everything. I forgot how long I need to wait before plugging the UV itself back in (I know I read it somewhere, but can't remember where).
Just took another peek...no leaking anywhere that I can tell !
