Hello. Im a noobie to the hobbie. Inherited a 55g cichlid tank with a 10" jaguar, a 5" jack dempsey, and 3 4-5" mystery cichlids. Ive had it a week. Now ive ordered a 210g aquarium with everything I need for it and am second guessing myself. Dont understand ammonia-nitrate cycle. Any help would be appreciated. Ive read the article but I dont understand it.

Welcome to Everything Aquatic!! Maybe this more basic article from a friend's website might help. It takes a lot of the more complicated information from our "Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle article and condences and simplifies it www.fishbeginner.info/home/nitrogen-cycle/Carl

Ive read the article but I dont understand it. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! Sounds like you were given a nice inheritance! Pictures are always fun, if you want to share. Sounds like a nice upgrade too. The Nitrogen Cycle can be a complex one to understand, but I suggest taken it bit by bit. You don't have to know it all to get a tank to cycled. Basically, you have ammonia that is transformed in to Nitrites, then into Nitrates, which are non toxic. This ammonia is built up from the bio-load in the tank (fish,poop,food...) During the cycle process, you are looking for the ammonia numbers to come up, then back down, which shows there is a beginning cycle. You should be able to maintain zero level ammonia in the tank if the tank is fully cycled. If you struggle with ammonia readings, the most likely case is that the tank is not cycled. Of course, there is much more too it, but that's what the cycle is all about. Here are some basic resources that can help. Give them a try and if they prompt any questions, just let us know.
