I was at Petsmart Saturday and looked at new lights (T5? T8?) that I have on it right now (48in tube light) flickers but won't come on. I have no idea if it is the ballast or the light it's self.......light is original to a used tank that I've had for 3 yrs now......
I found a really cool LED light kit that allows for 3 lights (plus a moonlight setting...cool). It comes with a daytime?/daylight? bulb. Do the LED produce the light that my plants would need? IF so, I can hit both my low light plants, and my highlight plants with the same light kit. If not, there is a T? hood that has 2 lights, so I can still get the different light sources.

A T5 or T2 would definitely be better than a T8 lamp, assuming you go with a 6000K to 8000K light temperature. SHOs are better yet LEDs CAN be the best yet, unfortunately many of the LEDs flooding the market such as the Marineland Double Brite are little better than LED flashlights and are not planted aquarium capable. The TMC GroBeam is by far the most plant capable with less LEDs needed for maximum output of essential PUR (useful light energy). Two GroBeam 500s will easily run a 60 gallon medium light requiring planted tank Please Read these article: * Aquarium Lighting; Facts & Information (including T2, T5, SHO, & LED sections) * Aquarium LED Lights, Lighting * GroBeam ReviewCarl

I love my TMC GroBeams. Can't say it enough. Plant growth is out of control!
