I was doing my weekly water changes for my goldfish. I had just finished with the 2 10 gallons and dumping their old water into the 40. Then there was the 4 gallon I had saved up from when I transported Puon from the 4 gallon container to the 10 with Oranda. Anyway, I was going to dump the water into the but when I took the top off my Whisper filter, I saw strange white things floating and ONLY in the filter. That means whatever white stuff was in the water, it was filtering out. My first thought was fungus or white fuzzy stuff that grows in my betta fry tanks. Then I noticed white on the filter cover itself. Then I realized that is was toothpaste!!! I got a new electric toothbrush and it vibrates so much that it shoots tiny bits of toothpaste when it vibrates. That being my only real explanation since the 4 gallon is on the floor, 3 feet away from where I brush my teeth, and also the fact that my toothpaste is white. But I had a fish, my oldest goldfish Puon living in the 4 gallon while I was brushing my teeth every morning only 3 weeks prior!!! The fish seems fine and is in the 10 gallon now. If I was getting toothpaste in there, how could it have survived? Is toothpaste non-toxic to fish? I only noticed it after I took out Puon and didn't do a water change for 3 weeks. Before that I was doing 25-30% water changes every week so maybe the stuff didn't get to build up. But before that when Puon was living there and I was only doing water changes every few weeks before you guys corrected me, I never noticed a thing. But then again, I had a different electric toothbrush back then that didn't vibrate so much. (It broke a while ago) I've always tried to brush my teeth clear of my plastic containers on the bathroom floor. But when I tested my toothbrush and wetted it with water and holding it at a about the place I normally brush my teeth and turning it on, I could feel it spraying water droplets only a foot shy of where my 4 gallon container is. Then I dumped the 4 gallon and now it is sitting in my bathroom empty.
I'm pretty sure it was toothpaste but I have my doubts. Why would it show up so suddenly and not before? If it was tooth paste, is my fish ok? If something else, what? Also, to sterilize it so I can put fish there in the future, how would I clean it to get rid of a tooth paste residue or whatever that stuff is if it is not toothpaste? Sorry for so many questions. This is just a very strange event for me plus I am wound up right now from reading a very action-packed part of a book.
