I have 5 tanks, holding platy's, mollies and guppies. I have read all I can find on breeding- I have 1 male per 2-4 females, the correct water conditions, weekly water changes. One of my tanks is just for the moms-to-be- I move them shortly before I think they will give birth. Something odd is happening, though- I can see the babies in them, know they are going to give birth very soon. I come back a number of hours later, and the fish no longer looks pregnant. With no fry. I have a zillion hiding spots- tons of plants for then to hide in (baby tears, grasses, rotala, ludwigis, etc). I know they will eat them, but can't believe they would eat all of them. This is happening over and over. Any ideas what's going on? Oh, this is mainly happening with my platy's.
Isn't happening with my mollies...because they aren't getting pregnant. Scattered in 2 tanks (a 55 and a 44) there are about 15 females, and 4 males. No pregnant fish. I few of them gave birth about 2 months ago, and then nothing. Isn't that odd? I have seem then do there mating ritual. I am wondering if I somehow have sterile males or something? Is there a site or book that is directed specifically towards breeding? I have read what I can find, but it's all the basics of breeding. All these fish are supposed to be so easy to breed, people that do nothing have babies left and right, and I am doing everything you are "supposed" to do to have happy breeding fish, and can't them, lol. The only thing I can think of, is that due to the many live plants I have co2 tanks set up (co2 during day, air pumps at nite)- I know that changes the pH daily- is that enough to stress them so they don't give birth or get pregnant?
Thanks for reading my book of questions
