I was looking at the 5 1/2 gallon still sitting in my bathroom back from when I bleached a month ago that caused it to crack. I really don't want to throw it away because of how much effort I spend into bleaching and scrubbing it down. I was thinking that maybe I could turn the undamaged pieces of glass into 5 gallon glass tank tops and dividers. Of course I would need a drill and someone highly skilled. I was thinking of getting it done at Home Depot if they will do it for free. It could save me some money for tank tops as well as giving me a 5 gallon divider that no store seems to carry. The only problem is I don't know what size for the cuts to be to make the glass divider which needs to be an exact length to fit into the tank right. If anyone knows the correct units, my tank is an orginary 5 1/2 gallon, not tall or of any irregular shape. It's the kind you find at petstores for about $9 that comes with no additional but the tank itself. I would get the exact metrics but I don't have the sticker it had on it when I got it that said the length, height, and width.
So does anyone know what would be the correct measurements for a 5 1/2 gallon tank divider and top based on this?
The 5 1/2 gallon tanks I buy are always exactly the same brand and size so a tank divider made from that 5 gallon would work for any others I have. Thank you.

Renee, Why don't you buy another piece of glass that is the exact same dimensions as the cracked panel and use some sealant to put it inside over the cracked piece? You would only have to seal the vertical corners and the bottom edge.
I don't recall if you said which panel was cracked, front or end? If front, just turn it so it is at the back, if end, no problem, nobody looks in the ends much anyway. Then you would still have the tank to use as you see fit. Hospital/quarantine/growout/more fish..... ;D
Taking apart the tank seems like a lot of work just to get the glass pieces. Personally, I would rather have another tank than a divider or two. John

Well, its jsut I've been looking for a 5 1/2 gallon divider for about 3 years and I have never been able to find one. I really really CAN'T fix the panel because I have no idea how and the crack got so bad from me handling it in the first place. I have very shaky hands (a tremor) and fixing it would probably take a few hours. I have already spend a few hours bleached it and that's how I broke it. It is not worth it to me. I would really prefer to get another one and make use of the pieces since I lack much money (my family is somwhat poor) so I would like to save the money on buying tank tops and a tank divider which I cannot find than spending more money on the tank which I highly doubt I can fix.
2 panels, not one need fixing by the way. One front and one side panel are cracked. I will , be getting another 5 gallon after I save up. Thanks though 8.

I agree with John/8 Renee, even if you have little money your time is more valuable earning some extra money to buy a new tank than taking apart this 5 gallon aquarium for a divider, especially since glass is not easily drilled, even by Pros.
In fact when I built glass tanks with drilled holes for plumbing, the holes were of sizes larger than you would need for a divider, were done with a special glass drill, and MOST IMPORTANTLY were drilled before the tank was put together do to risk of breakage during drilling.
A plexi glass panel that can be drilled with 1/8 inch holes with a standard drill and then placed "tightly" into your tank (no silicone) would make a simple divider. Another idea is a glass panel with a small space for water to pass over and under it and then siliconed into the aquarium. This is how all our divided tanks were set up in my last Aquarium Store.

Thanks Carl. Sorry 8, I didn't know drilling a tank was that hard. I guess I'll just have to throw it away then or sell it for $2 on craiglist or something. I may be able to find some cheap alternatives for tank tops at a store like K-Mart or Target or something. Thanks guys. Wish iI I could save this tank but with it's condition and the amount of required to fix it, I guess not...
