I have a freshwater 500 gallon pond using a filter medium with uv light. The pond is inside of my screen enclosure, located in the Tampa Florida area. The pond has been running for over 6 years.
About 3 months ago I found that the filter was requiring frequent cleaning, about once a week due to reduced water flow. Previously it only required cleaning about once a month. At the same time I started finding short white threads in the filter medium during cleaning. I try to remove as many as possible, but they are more every time I clean the filter.
I add two ounces of Algae Fix to the water once per week.
Any idea what may be causing this? Is it something I need to be concered about? Any fix recommended?

Sorry for the slow response, often weekends many are off do other activities such as myself. This seems to describe strands of filter material such as poly fibers. Do you have a PondMaster Filter, these use a while poly material? If not, can you provide a picture? It may be that the filter material is degenerating and needs replacing BTW, welcome to Everything Aquatic Carl
