This may seem like a dumb question. I bought a new light for my 5 gallon. It's a florescent and it came with a bulb. It says "Marineland F14T8D" on it. Does that mean that it's a 14 inch? I've not seen a 14 inch light at any of the 3 places I've looked so far. I want to replace that bulb because it is very white and harsh looking. For my 10 gallon I bought a regular old GE plant and aquarium bulb at Lowe's and I really like how it looks. I was hoping to find the same for my new 5 gallon's light, but the smallest I've found so far is 18 inch. So I looked at Petsmart to see their bulbs and all they had was a 15 inch Aqua-glo 18000K bulb. I used to have one of those for my 10 and I think it'll be too blue and too bright.
So what kind of bulb do I need? The light box says it's a Perfecto Perfect-A-Strip/PAL. On the UPC sticker it says 27 inch HEX PAL florescent. The whole light unit is 15 3/4 inches long. I haven't tried the lfs I purchased the light from yet. I was there twice in less than 24 hours just last week and I figured they're probably sick of me, lol. They might have just the thing in stock. Or at least would be able to give me more info. I just thought that one of you would most likely have some good insight as well. It never hurts to get extra brain power!

What you have is not as common any more; It is a 14 watt 15 inch lamp. Hagen, Coralife, NEC and others make this lamp. I strongly recommend a 5500 to 7500 K bulb (around 6500 K is best) for plants, and even fish and coral (marine) Please see this article: Aquarium lightingYou can also retrofit your aquarium for more modern lights such as the state of the art T2 or for this size tank (5 gallon) the 15 watt CFL 6400 K 15 Watt CFLCarl

Thanks for the info, Carl. 6500K is about what I was shooting for. I may return this fixture and buy a little incandescent fixture and get a CFL like you mentioned. It's certainly a lot cheaper! It's just for my QT tank, so I don't really need anything fancy.
