My little guy held on as long as he could. But there was nothing I could do for him. I lost my nerite snail a couple of days ago also, Does anyone think this is just a coinencidence? All the water paramaters were good,

well I am very sorry to hear about your loss too John, I know how hard you worked on your pond and all the fish, well I know it happens to the best also, so I have to look at it as experience and try again in a little while.. Thanks for the hug! Bikeguy: He seemed fine Friday morning, before I left for work, then by the time I got home he was laying on the bottom of the tank he would swim every now and then, I chaged about 35% of his water but Friday night he just seemed more still so I tried the salt bath again like before but he just never got better, and this evening he just past.... My water parameters are 30 Nitrate 0 Nitrite 200 GH 50-60 KH 7.2 PH

your perameters are good. what my lil theory was....when a snail gets sick....it often secretes a poison. this is often toxic. i have heard of entire tanks dying from 1 sick snail. others may disagree here....but i have seen it on several occasions while doing tank maintenance....

Well if it was the snail that got him sick, do you think the other snail will be ok? Or can I expect him to die as well? I know you said it was just a theory, but it makes sense if what you say about snails is true. Didn't seem to be a good day for fish yesterday. Hope everyone elses fish are healthy and well! Thanks everyone for all your help and advise with cash over the last few months!

I know you said it was just a theory, but it makes sense if what you say about snails is true. I would watch your other snail just in case. I have heard of this theory, however personally have not witnessed this to happen. I would venture that toxins or bacteria may be released, but in healthy tank I think this should be limited. I would run some carbon filtration if you have not already done so for removal of the toxins that are effectively removed by carbon. See the section about carbon for more about what carbon can and cannot remove: Aquarium Answers; Filter Media, carbonCarl

Where do I get the carbon? I was thinking about just cleaning the whole tank really good and start the recycling again before I get another fish, I could put my last snail in the little tank with some of the old water, If he is ok and the water is.. what do you think?

Most Pet Stores should have carbon or Ammo-Carbon (which is a combination of cabon and ammonia removing Zeolite that I use when I find it necessary to use carbon or similar). Carl

Sorry to hear both of you guys. Like Murdock said, sometimes things happen. I commend you though Cahsay for having such a positive attitude and not giving up after your fish died. Keep it up and you may be an expert fishkeeper someday!!
