Wow guys, I am so excited thought I'd share this with you all. Just built this stand today. It was very easy...Granted my friend did most of the work. ;D This stand is to hold 2 40 gallon breeders on bottom 2 shelves and 2 10's on the top. We even stained it a red mahagony color. Only took couple hrs from start 2 finish and only cost $50 total including wood, hardware, and stain!!!!

Wow. That is a great price for all the supplies to make a stand. Congrats!
...Will you have to use a ladde to reach the 10 gallons on top though?

Great job, looks great with the red mahogany stain too.
If I can make one suggestion though, & that is to have a diagonal cross brace in the back (& maybe one side as well), this will help alleviate sway, especially since you will have tanks on the top. I built all my own stand in the room of my house that housed aquariums (all two or three tier) as well as my stores. Although earthquakes are not as common as where I was in LA, you still get them in Colorado. I had a stand I built in my store that had a 250 gallon marine tank on top that survived a 6.0 earthquake in 1987 that had its epicenter only a couple of miles from my store. We lost a lot of water from "sloshing" and had electrical damage (from water splashing into sockets) and damage from merchandise falling (about $3000), but all the stands and tanks on them "held".
Sorry Brenda, I just worry about the "what ifs"

as an engineer and friend, I would have to agree w/ Carl on the diagonal bracing - a piece of thin steel screwed in behind everything should prevent it from wracking and wouldn't look distracting - wouldn't have to be more than 1" wide- other than, I think you did a great job! congratulations!
