I'm thinking about getting some red cherry shrimp again for my 10 gallon. Those little guys are so much fun!
Do you think it'd be ok to have 5 or 6 of them in my 10 gallon with 1 female betta, 4 white clouds and a Celestial Pearl Danio, or would that be too much?

I'd be interested in hearing in others on this as well as we like alot of diversity and fun to watch creatures in our main tank. I'm thinking that shrimp in general don't add much to the overall bio-load but I guess it depends on how many you get. And then the other thing is would any of the other fish bother the shrimp? I know people sometimes keep shrimp in a tank by themselves but I'm not sure if it's because they want a pure tank of just shrimp or maybe the fish prey on them. I'm thinking adults are probably big enough so they might be left alone if there aren't any aggressive fish in your tank.

BBG...you can have up to 10 of those little guys in the tank. I have somewhere around 50 or so in a 10g with 6 Platy fry, 40+ Endlers (new fry to adults) in a VERY HEAVY Planted tank. I run a 20g HOB filter and I change about 6 to 8g of water a week and with the plants, the parameters are great. They are happily eating and breeding.

i have about 40 shrimps that i caught in a local stream in a mountain near our place.they have been breeding well and man they love brown algaes which are abundant among my tanks, yet i do not know what their name or species they are. i tried mixing some with bettas and ended disastrously.all the shrimp i out with the bettas(i was hoping they will be the algae eaters for their tank).the shrimps grow barely an inch. sorry if it sounds off topic.can't help to react with regards of the betta-shrimp combination.but i am not familiar with cherry shrimps so they maybe bigger than my shrimps.

Danny, Red Cherry Shrimp get to be an inch if that. ALL shrimp need a place to hide. That is why my shrimp tanks are heavy planted. I have either Christmas Moss or Flame moss (anyone remember? I traded Java Moss to someone on here but forgot who ). It grows beautifully in a huge bunch and I have Java fern and Ancheris? and 2 other plants that I forgot the names. Anyway there is enough hiding places for the young RCS fry to hide and the adults when they molt. Lori

I had Red Cherry Shrimp with my first betta, a male CT named Jasper. He spent the first few days chasing them around, but eventually he gave up because he was too slow.
How Sally my female will react to them is anyone's guess. She's probably faster than Jasper was, since she's not lugging a ton of finnage around, but she's also quite a bit older too.
I've got a nice piece of driftwood that is shaped so that shrimp can get under it and hang out without being bothered by bigger fish, lots of java fern leaves, anubias leaves and a couple of bushy crypts. I've also got a ball of java moss in another tank that I can throw in there if needed.
I think it's worth a shot. Now, I just need to find some shrimp.

I dropped off some juvenile platys at two of the LFS that take adoption fish (males at one, females at the other) and only one had any RCS. Was kind of pricey at $7 each and I only saw one live one (not sure if the other two were dead or maybe they were just an old exo-skelatons from molting - couldn't tell since they were in the far corner). The tank mates were lots of black neon tetras so obviously not big enough to bother the shrimp. Let us know how this works out for you BG!

I still breed and sale the RCS...$1 each plus shipping. I think I still have breather bags. I usually try to add 1 adult male and 1 adult female to each bag to ensure that you get a breeding pair...took me 3x to get a freaking male...first order was 4 (all ended up being female)...2nd was 10....again all female...next was 4...and all 4 were requested adult males!!! LOL
BBG...if ya want some let me know...shipping is around $6-$10 for priority I think...or $25 for overnight (again...im guessing). Lori

I finally got around to ordering some shrimp from Suzie Q a few weeks ago! I got them on the 20th of August and put them in my 10 gallon with the female betta, white clouds and a CPD. After a couple of days, I decided to move the betta. She was like a shark on the hunt looking for those poor shrimp!
Since I've moved her, the shrimp are out and about all the time. They've also done a fantastic job cleaning up the BBA problem I had!! I've got some pics of the tank from a couple of months ago that show the algae around somewhere. When I find them, I will post before and after shots. It's amazing what 7 or 8 little RCS did in such a short amount of time!!
Oh and one of the females is lugging around a batch of eggs already!! I'm so glad I got these little goobs again. They're so fun!

This is great Stephanie! Thanks go to Suzie Q (Lori) for sending you the Red Cherry Shrimp. Love to see your pics of the before and after of the BBA (Black Beard Algae). It is amazing how nature can take of algae problems we battle with other less effective methods! BTW, how are your CPD (Celebes Pearl Danios) doing? Carl

Ok! Here is a great "before" picture. I took this 3 days before my wonderful shrimp arrived from wonderful Lori. Here it is tonight. Look at the difference in the crypt lutea in the middle, as well as the java fern on the right. Amazing! Unfortunately Carl, I've only got 1 CPD left. All the others mysteriously disappeared one by one. He's doing pretty well as far I can tell... of course I thought the others were doing well too before they vanished! I plan on trying more someday, but I'll do a species only tank for them.

Wow, the picture really tell the story; it is quite the night & day difference.
Sorry about the missing Shrimp though, this has always been the tough part about shrimp for me too; too many other fish that may make a snack of them.

I think I've only lost 1 or maybe 2 shrimp. Sally the betta is my prime suspect, but she's in another tank now, so that shouldn't be a concern anymore. I have seen a white cloud chase shrimp a couple of times, but I don't think they are really big enough to do any damage.
My missing Celestial Pearl Danios are what mystifies me. I never found any trace of them. Of course, they are very small, so who knows... the one I have left is a very plucky little thing. I like him a lot.

I missed this post...sry Glad the female is berried...you will have tiny babies before you know it. That moss is Christmas Moss...it will grow in your tank if you put it in..I actually need to "trim" mine again ...that stuff is awesome. If you only have RCS in the tank...they DONT eat the babies so it will be ok. I love my Cherries Lori

I put the Christmas moss in my 5 gallon for a while to see how it grows. I'm trying to decide if I want to take a fish tank to work and if I do, I'll put it in there. It is quite pretty. It's like Java moss on mild steroids or something.
I haven't spotted any shrimp babies yet. The mom has been hiding in a spot where it's really hard for me to see her and check out how things are progressing. It's been about 2 weeks since I noticed that she was berried (which my mom thinks is a very strange term, lol).

Good luck raising some shrimp babies. I really want some too but I think the fish in both my tanks are just way to voracious. I'd be really upset to get some shrimp and then have them all end up snacks. I need another tank!

I've got shrimp babies! At least, I've got one that I know about. I vacuumed the gravel yesterday, before I knew Shrimp Mom hatched the babies. I just cleaned up in the open areas, so I hope I didn't suck up too many tots.
What's the best way to vacuum now that I've these tinier little things in there?

Two thoughts (I am sure others may have other suggestions):
*Use air line tubing to siphon along the bottom (this works quite well in small tanks & bowls)
*In larger aquariums/tanks carefully vacuuming into a bucket, using a fine net to strain the bucket (or even act a a strainer for the end of the hose to strain water as it enters the bucket)
