I had a guppy that survived being out of water for who knows how many minutes/hours and survived with no long term injury and without being that stressed.
This was a few days ago. I came home from school and sensed something was up when I counted my female guppies and wasn't sure if all 10 of them were in the large container I kept them in. They are very active and go everywhere so they are very hard to count. When I couldn't get an accurate number (I kept counting 9 or 10) after a while trying to get the number of them in there, I gave up and decided that they were probably all in there.
A few hours later, I went to cull a female with dropsy who had been getting slowly worse for almost a month that baths wasn't helping.
I counted my fish and again I got the feeling that a fish was missing. I kept trying to get the number of fish (again they swim super fast so trying to get their numbers is extremely difficult) and came to the conclusion that there was only 9 plus one of my blue tailed females was nowhere to be found. I searched around and then finally found her, mildly wet and flopping on the floor under my dresser. I immedietly put her back in but shockingly, her only symtoms of stress was that her breathing was slightly heavy, her tail fin was dulled in color, and her dorsel fin partially down. I put in a regular wonder shell for a day to help with stress just in case. She is doing better now and is schooling with the others and eating well.
Her hardiness surprises me. The tank is 3 feet above the carpet, so when she jumped, she fell that distance. Also, she was out of the water for possibly two hours if she jumped out the first time I took the lid off or if she jumped when I took off the lid the second time, she was out of the water for at least 5 minutes. Somehow she was not harmed much at all by this.
I don't think she got out when the cover was on because it covers 95% or more of the container and the small area at the sides of the guppy container where fish could jump through is too small for a guppy to jump out of unless she was very small and jumped through it sideways. However, I'm keeping my eyes open for any way they could jump out.
I am very thankful that she made it. I just wanted to share my story about her. She is a very very lucky fish.
