I'm much more familiar with the Victorian cichlids than any other kind of at risk fish, so I'll start here.

Lake Victoria is in huge trouble. The Nile Perch's introduction has decimated a huge percentage of the population, causing the cichlids (known as furu in their native land) to have to find new habitats. Introduced plant species and overcutting of trees has changed the nature of this lake to very murky. The food sources have changed, the ecosystem has changed...and we've lost at least 200 species so far. This is a young lake, comparatively, and evolution is or was still taking place. Without man's intervention, who knows what these species would have evolved into in the future?

Thought I would post a recent pic of the Prognathochromis Perrieri. These fish are believed to be extinct in the wild. I still can't believe I actually have them. I am not even sure how many people in the country even have them. I hope that I along with my other friends that have these can really make a difference with them.

Hey guys, it's been a while. Been busy moving my house of fish into the fish room aka the garage that's been made over. Finally have my first tank set up out there on a rack and going to work this week into moving more. But the reason I posted here is so amazing to me...long story though.

I recently got the Parachromis sp. "La Ceiba Yellowhead" listed under the cares program of the aca. I had gotten a hold of a male from a guy on my local group's forum and went searching for a female. The only 2 guys in the US with wild breeding pairs are Jeff Rapps and Ken aka fishfarm. So I contacted Jeff first and was able to get a nice sized female. The night I added her to the 300g rubbermaid tub outside (aka my pond) we ha a huge storm which over flowed the tub. we're talking about 5 inches or so of rain which we rarely get. Well the next morning I couldn't find the male anywhere. I figure he jumped and one of the cats or other various wild things we have here carried him off. So in a panic as I had just started the process of getting them listed in cares, I contacted Ken and was able to get a male from him. 3 days later, I find the female floating...now let me tell you, I was totally and completely frustrated and depressed. I had just gotten the letter from cares saying they were listed. So 2 weeks ago I was able to get some Juvies from Ken which are doing well on my kitchen counter tank. The male in the 300 outside is also doing well. I had an oddball tank of big fish in the house that I needed for growing some new angels out in so threw all the fish in with the para male. We're talking 2 dragon gobies, 2 big huge parrot fish I rescued (they were in a tiny tank and each are about 8 inches), a school of rainbows, a retired male jewel cichlid and a single molly female. Well, last Sun a fish friend of mine was over and we were hanging out by the pond when suddenly I saw a huge school of fry that were being guarded by the para male! So needless to say I'm freaking out and realized that before the female passed on, they spawned. Now to get a tank ready and somehow catch the little guys without being killed by the dad:) OY these fish will give me a heart attack someday!

This is indeed a rather unusual case but interesting to read.

The first thing that wow'd me if that Jeff actually had that species given he's 99% carrying South American types, so that's a big find if Jeff actually carried this African. He's like 30 minutes from me over in Phillpsburg.

The other WOW that jumps out on me is that a female spawning rapidly and able to brood up the fry that fast. Eggs spit out not hatched would die so that if fry were able to be brooded that quick, I'd probably think that she might have already been carrying. The species I have all take about 7-10 days of brooding before you even can see a fish forming out of the egg. I've tumbled a few times myself so this really is a very odd case to see them, but it's a good news kind of thing. I really wish you'd have pics of that too as 9 times out of 10 with the breeding part, the male actually is a threat to fry in terms of eating them up. Really a good amazing story here, so I hope you can get shots of that. Not something you hear about every day!

Many of your substrate spawning types though, males are outstanding guardians on their fry, so much to the point, they generally pin other species to sides of tanks in many cases. I'm convinced substrate spawners act just like South Americans where they pair bond to mate, not harem group.

Well these paras are SAmerican. Ken Davis was the one that found them...I'll find the article he sent in to the aca for the cares program. He collects each year in Uruguay and found these guys, realized that they were a new species of Paras and he collected a few...went back the next year and the lagoon they found them in was polluted and taken over by a hotel...really wasn't even there anymore. Far as I know and have heard Jeff Rapps and Ken are the only 2 in the US with wilds that are breeding them.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the cichlids Sarah. But at least they spawned. You could get many surviving fish from it.

Thank you:) Least I still get to see you at Facebook, but yeah I'll try to be better at coming around when I'm online. And I'll try to get pics of the fry once I start to move them. Right now they are in a accidental totally natural biosphere or what ever you'd call it in this pond thingy. There's lots of plants and over growth, but the fish seem to love it...so much that the rainbows all spawned too. I've been pulling out so many rainbow babies that I've been giving them away as the parents are from the lfs and I can't say if they are pure or hybrids. But the para fry are so totally different and I actually saw them come to the dad when he 'called' them...was the coolest thing:) He did this little flashy wiggle and all the babies came running to him. There's a black 2inch pvc pipe that's hard to see in the bottom 'stuff' that they live in with the dad. so Pics are hard to get, but I'll try:)

Thank you! They are in a 300g right now. I'm working on setting up my garage as a fish room...have 2 tanks set up and running with fish as of today *huge success for me whoot!* and once I set up hopefully tomorrow some of the 30gs, I'm going to catch myself a big load of the babies to put in one of them.

I saw them clearly for the first time today, they were at the top picking off the plants that are growing in the pond. They are about a quarter inch long and definitely without any doubt at all paras. They've already got that black stripe running down their middles and so freakin' cute I can't even say! My camera is full and I can't find the cord to download the pics or I'd have pics for you, but hopefully soon:)

My goal right now for this next week is to get the rack finished (my husband is going to cut the boards I need for cross ways tomorrow) and then during the week get ALLLLL the tanks out of my house and into the garage. I have a fish friend that's also moving fish over tomorrow, he's got a 150 tub that I've already set up in the garage for him, he's got bigger fish...lol. Then between moving everyone out there and selling a big huge load of my fish at our local group's auction on Sat, I should be good to go! Course who knows what I'll be coming home with on Sat night * I think I need to update my list of what I've got and keep. But the paras right now are my biggest "yay thing"

By the name I would have thought that was an African but when you said Jeff Rapps I was like wow didn't think he'd have that because I thought they were Africans. Yeah Jeff's a great guy to get any South Americans from and I was looking at him to link Bill with a Veija.

I think that explains why the father is watching the fry. From having seen Pytchochromis Oligocanthus spawn, they supressed all the other species on the sides of the tank guarding the fry, both male and female. Substrate spawners as far as I saw are outstanding parents and guardians. With the space of that 300 gallons, there should be minimal stress put on the other inhabitants, which is a plus. If you elect to breed this up again, instead of buying another female, you could just wait for these fry to mature and breed them back. I'd imagine you have a tremendous number in there actually. I counted best I could on my spawn, (Pyt. Olig.) and I think it was about 250. Over time, natural selection and limited space of the 100 gallon tank did get a few of them, plus donating with a bad market time I think I have about 50 left now. Many easily spotted males I have due to sheer size of their siblings.

I'll be getting photos soon. I've spent the morning catching a bunch of the babies, it's starting to get a little colder at night now (actually got to 49 last night!!!) which is weird for this area, but catching them all and I can't believe how many babies there are!!! OY! I have yet to catch the dad as he's a tricky one and in a 300g...yeah right * But once I do and get that one cleared out, I think I'll be in the market for another female...I'm hooked!

OH GUESS WHAT!!!! *jumping up and down* First of all, I think I've caught most of the babies now and there's got go be between 600-800 kiddos in there! I love watching them! But I finally caught the dad and got him inside, then started to lower the water level so I can get this thing cleaned out when OH MY GOODNESS!!!! There's another para in there!!!!! Somewhere some how, that first one that I thought died...didn't. I have an official pair!!! I screamed so loud that my mom who was over thought I was snake bit...lol I can't even believe it! All summer, I never saw them both, so just thought I was seeing the one each time * YAY!!! Paras for all!!! lol
