OK, I started this one because Woodworm is my darling husband, Walt. I convinced him to sign up for the forum, and I'm sure he'll enjoy it here.
Welcome honey!

Welcome Walt. As you probably have already been told by Barbara, there's plenty of fellow cichlid keepers here with tons of knowledge and experience. Hope you enjoy the forum. Maybe you will even teach us a thing or two along the way.

Cichlids are really more Babara'a thing then mine, though I do really like them. I am more into bottom dwellers the bigger and more freaky the better.

I'll send you all my prize plecos when they get too big - too bad you don't have a giant SW - sea robins are really cool!

I'll take them once I can get my raised pond built on our back porch. I am planning on it being 10' X 8' X 2' which comes out to around 1000 gallons. It will be a bit before I can build this thing since the cost of putting the filtration system together the way I want to is expensive not to mention the under water lighting. When I do get this little pond done though it will be good for some of my larger plecos.

let me know when you build the pond - I'm an engineer - 1,000 gallons is a lot of weight for your deck - would be glad to help you out in terms of design, structural or otherwise.....

I call it my deck, but it is a concrete slab ranging from 15 to 20 inches thick depending the orientation of the slope of the yard. I will take you up on the offer though. I will shoot you the plans when I get them finalized to see if you have any ideas/suggestions on how it could be improved.

sounds great! looking forward to it - do you have the original plans on the slab? would like to know how much rebar there is in there 1st....WWF (woven wire) won't be much help if that's all that was used...

No I have no idea how the slab was reinforced, it came with the house when we bought it last year. I may be able to talk to my neighbor to see if he knows, since he was living there when it was pored. Do you think that it will make a big difference in my plans if it doesn't?

A man after my own heart! I also love bottome dwellers and algae eaters. Thanks Kagome. I love my "bottom bouncers" and have some plans in the works to setup a tank or 2 here in the near future where they are the main focus. I look forward to bouncing ideas off you when the time comes to get the tanks going.

we're talking over 4 tons of water alone! could be 4" of conc over compressed soil.....15-20" of unreinforced conc won't hold up - it'll crack - how big is the slab?

The slab is 31' long X 12' wide with no expansion joints. I found out when I went out to measure it that my recollections were wrong on the thickness. The 15-20 was for the house on that side of the slope. The porch slab is only approximately 6-10 inches plus however deep the footing was dug on the end I am wanting to use. It may be a bit more then what I measured since the lawn needs mowed badly (September was the last cutting). The slab seems like it is not attached to the house as-far-as I can tell. There are 2 cracks running in the slab already, but I don't know if that means much do to no expansion joints and the clay content in the soil in this area is famous for breaking foundations.
