John,
That is a nice looking fish I have to say, but I also think, this isn't a Metriclimea Lombardoi (Kenyi) If someone knows something else to help here that would be good, but what stands out to me is the sheer number of stripes. Kenyi usually have 2-3 very thick larger stripes, almost like an Obliquedin as far as I've seen. There might be some other variant out there, which is why I'm not going to say with certainty, but it doesn't have the typical look of a Kenyi I think. Might be a hybrid.

Kinda looks like an afra...I have no idea, I'm terrible at ID's. It's a fish, that's I'm pretty sure of...LOL...and a pretty one.

like I mentioned on a different thread, I watched this fish a few times over a week - all the other fish were yellow, which from everything I've read leads me to believe it's a female - and the blue in the pictures isn't as dark as the fish - seems to me if it was going to turn it would have by now or be lighter in color or a late transitioner.....who knows - time will tell - wish me luck - oh, and it was labeled kenyi for whatever that's worth

The coloration I understand John, but what I'm keying on here, doing image searches on the professional forums, I think you'll see what I'm getting at. The sheer number of the stripes pretty much exceed any image for a Kenyi I have seen yet, and the width of the stripes on the images I view, plus looking at my group, are much thicker. I'm just looking out for you is all. I have a gut feeling this is a hybrid based on the stripe count and how thin they are. Look at our banned reference site on the profiles. I HATE this reference site because it sucks as a whole, but since CF is blocked off, use this to see what I mean. Look at the thickness and stripe count. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maylandia_lombardoi

Key on the numbers only, but not the supporting point??? I'm just saying, if one looks at the stripes on the posted pic, it's a VERY high count and they look very thin by comparison. It doesn't make sense to just say the count is too high, but supporting my point is also the thickness, which clearly sailed over the head as that just got ignored.

What ever she may be, she is a nice looking fish and I hope she works out for you John. IMO, the body appears to be a bit long as compared to the Kenyis I have kept. Maybe she is a hybrid, and looking at this froma positive angle, MAYBE this also means her bloodline includes some more passive Mbuna. I looked through Big Sky cichlids (a site I have liked for Cichlids for some time), but could not come up with anything positive. I also looked of Ron Coleman's site (he has been someone I coresponded with and respect greatly for some time as well)), but his site is more about cichlid research and cichlids in general. Barbara, what were you going to say? maybe it's a zebra - whatever it is, I like it - I only hope it is a female now that the question of it's identity has been brought up - all the pics of kenyis I looked at had 5-6 bars w/ the 3rd bar back from the tail somewhat V shaped like the fish I have - just another fine example of my cichlid luck.....

Nice fish Murdock, whatever species she is. I wish you luck with her. I wish I could help you identify if she is a hybrid or not but I am very bad at fish identfication. Good luck!

I really have no idea. In looking at some pictures, she somewhat resembled an Afra, but I couldn't say for sure. I am really horrible at IDing fish. She's really beautiful, whatever she is. And don't worry about a hybrid if you aren't planning on breeding. Enjoy the fish.

thanks Barbara - am hoping she is a she, and I do not plan on breeding any cichlids at this point - what I am most happy about is that she seems healthy and happy and her presence has bought the one lab out of hiding and now I have a very peaceful active tank - there's no chasing going on and nobody is hassling anybody - so far, so good

could it be this? Maylandia zebra makonde - found a picture but no info - it is from Lake Malawi - the bars do not extend up into the finnage - maybe it is a hybrid but was sold to me as a kenyi

Billy, you have me confused between Jon and John.....does anyone have any info on Maylandia zebra makonde? the more I look at the pictures of this species, the more inclined I am to believing this is what I have and not a kenyi.....who knows? I have nothing to go on at this point except it is a nice fish - just would like to know for sure if it's a male or female - I was counting on it being a female kenyi - help, please!

I want to say maybe one but rarely goes into display posture - anal fin is usually clamped - it's only 1-1/2" long - what are you thinking?

John, It does look similar to that species you mentioned, with one small exception. The image I pulled here off Malawimayhem shows a fish that is more rounded in body, and yours looks more torpedo shaped, but that could just be a site location varient as well, or as I said before, you have a possibility this could be a hybrid of some sorts. www.malawicichlidhomepage.com/aquarium/maylandia_z_makonde.htmlIt might be a case of the difference in male/female too. I do not know this species off the top of my head, but at least in terms of color and pattern matches, this is a good match in my opinion. Even if it's not a Lombardoi, you still have a nice looking fish either way. If you REALLY do want Lombardoi's, just wait a few months for my spawn to grow out and I can send to you, or if you really are aiming for a female, I do have 3 adults, that I could send one of them to you. I am not sure if you are aware of this or not about Lombardoi, and I had to look this up as one of my females I thought was a half male half female, because the blue is dirty blue, but not quite yellow. I only knew it was female because at one time, I saw a pile of eggs in the mouth, but it's a very dirty blue looking female. So what I wanted to share with you is this. When breeding/spawning, females have been known to take on a male look and actually get into fights with other fish. If I send you a known female and the color dilutes a bit, there is no mis sexing LOL I definetly have 3 females and 2 males. If time is not an issue, I can just wait for my spawn to grow out.

thanks Jon, the dead giveaway was the non-extension of the vertical stripes up into the topfin - mine has none - every kenyi pic distinctly shoed this - bear in mind as well that this fish has just finished it's color mode as all the others in the tank that I watched for a week stayed yellow - who knows, if it is a zebra, I'd like to know - will check out the link you sent and see if it has info - regardless, I do NOT plan on breeding them or "her" - thanks - John
