What about cherry shrimp? They eat algae, I believe.

RCS will not eat the fry unless they are dead or dying (I have witnessed them eating their own dead). I have hair algae in the tank with them and they don't touch it. The thick green algae still grows on the side of my tanks...I use a razor scraper blade to scrape it off.
I may take my young platy fry home and add them to the tank for the hair algae if they really eat it!

Thanks Eve...RCS are not to be confused with CRS (Crystal Red Shrimp).
Red Cherry Shrimp are a "solid" red (meaning that the entire shell may or may not be solid). RCS sell for about $1 a shrimp online.
Crystal Red Shrimp are "candy cane" striped...Red/White. Very beautiful shrimp and very expensive...like $20 a shrimp if it is "ok" marked.
