Hi, I'm back with another question. I had 6 yellow fish in my tank that cleaned off all the algae. I had them for about 4 years. They have all died in the past year and now the tank has either lots of brown algae, or too much green algae. The room the aquarium is in, is a very bright room, with two large windows and a patio door, so the sun is blasting in all day as it faces south. I leave the aquarium light on all day and turn it off at night. Still I get these algae problems. Should I get these yellow fish again or should I think of maybe a Pleco? Are Plecos good aquarium fish? I just don't know what to do about this problem. Thanks to everyone for their input.

if the sun is hitting the tank all day, no surprise about having green algae green algae grows from direct sunlight i recommend closing the blinds if you have all day long, until the sun goes down on that site brown algae is usually caused by not enough light but 12 hours on and 12 hours off is a good cycle
don't know how big your tank is, but bristlenose plecos, especially the females are awesome brown algae eaters

Sometimes Siamese Algae Eaters are good here as well. As to lighting from the windows, sometimes even blinds will let light in, I have had to on several occasions block the light coming in form a window with a towell draped behind the aquarium to stop algae of green water problems. Also keeping you nitrates via water changes controls one of the "food sources" of algae (phosphates are another) See this article as well: Aquarium Answers; AlgaeCarl
