I just sealed my 40 gallon with silicone today since my goldfish that seems to have lost some of its vision is sort of inactive unless it gets the idea that I'm feeding it and has a torn fin that hasn't healed that I can notice in almost a week.
Anyway, I resealed the 40 but I forgot to clean the glass before I added the silicone!!! I thoroughly cleaned the glass with vinegar and water but that was a week ago. Will the tank be ok or do I need to scrape all the silicone off and start over?
Also, I'm not sure how to properly seal the crack in my 5 gallon that is empty right now.
Thanks everyone for your help! If it wasn't for you guys, I feel like I'd still be roaming around in the dark trying to figure out what is correct fish information and what is misinformation!

Not to be the bearer of bad news, however the vinegar may not have cleaned it all. I recommend scraping all debris and old silicone with a Razor blade., but you still may be OK if the repair was not a major one. As to the 5 gallon, as I noted before, you need to prepare well, use quality 100% aquarium silicone, then apply a silicone bead, followed by using your index and middle finger over this bead slowly to form a ridge. I am sorry that you are having trouble with information on this question , however both I and Bill hacve provided you with some good points, please be careful of the tons of misinformation on the internet, especially in Yahoo Answers or about.com I will try and take a picture of this process in the next day to help some more I would give this Aquarium Answers Post another look as it has good information as to aquarium repair: CORRECT AQUARIUM SILICONE APPLICATIONS; What Silicone to use and what not to use, Aquarium Repair, Aquarium construction.Carl

Thanks Carl. Before I resealed my 40 gallon, I did scrape off the old silicone. The only reason I resealed it was because the old silcione was pealing off and I wanted the tank in good shape before I added fish and filled it with water. It was not leaking as faras a I know but then again I didn't test it by filling it with water.
The sealant I used was Aquarium Sealant made by Perfecto. It says it is 100% clear silicone rubber. But I didn't sand it before I added the silicone. Will the sealant do ok on the keeping the 40 gallon sealed and not leaking with what I did before I applied it?
