I've been looking into different fish to stock the 38g with once all this nasty stuff is cleared up. I came across the boesemani rainbow fish. I think that they would be a good choice for my current set up. Also they are widely available in my area and they are farm raised in Thailand and not wild caught. I was wondering if anyone on the forum had ever kept them or known someone who has? For those of you who have never even heard of them here's a link, make sure you scroll down past the first set of ads, there is more pictures and profile info below: animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/Rainbowfish/BoesemansRainbowfish.php

beautiful fish and a nicely written article.....will have to go back and read about aggression levels - very interesting, but like everything else around here, they're probably not available locally - did I mention happy birthday Kagome? LOL!

John, everything I have read says that they are very peaceful unless you have too many males in a school. Then the males will fight over the girls (how typical, lol) They are also supposed to be fairly easy to breed.
Eve, they have pretty good sized boesemani at the LFS where I got my butterfly loaches. The price there was $7.99 each. When I looked online it seemed that was a very good price.

I wanted to try them, but I was afraid they'd be too big for my 30 gal. I ended up with Celebes Rainbows instead. No regrets though, because I love my Celebes!!

You know something interesting about these Celebes Rainbows or rather even the term Celebes itself? This is currently known as the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, one of the islands I went to last May. Celebes used to be a Portugese colony over there and the Rainbows I believe are distantly related to the Halfbreaks that are endemic to that island.

I spent $21 a piece for my angelicus(I bought 3). One died and another has permanent gill damage. The other more common botia loaches are at least $10. I spent $40 on clown loaches and unfortunately I have lost two because of this streptococcus stuff in the tank, may still lose my other two. When the time comes I'll gladly put down the cash to buy a group of five or six of the boesemani.

I have kept MANY Boesmani Rainbow over the years and they are probably my favorite of the Rainbows.
They are generally not too difficult in m experience, however your tank size may become a problem with more than just a couple as they are very active and can grow quickly.
I never had problems with the colors (in males) as the article described, but then I always fed them a varied diet that was very heavy with Spirulina.

Carl I was wondering about that. As usual there seems to be no agreement in articles about just how large these fish get or what size tank you need. Some articles say they reach only three inches while others say that they get up to five or six. That's a huge difference when trying to figure out a tank's longterm bio-load! I didn't think that I would keep too large a group. I think that one advantage as far as this species of fish goes is the odd shape of my tank. It is four feet long which would give them a good long "run" down the tank. Also the upper levels of this tank are pretty much wide open, almost no obstruction for busy swimmers, and there is a good strong current to swim against. Since I have a ways to go before putting more fish in the tank I can do some more thinking and research and get more opinions. They seem like such neat fish and my husband seems to really like the idea of trying some.

I've been enjoying my 55G community tank so much I'm thinking about starting a 120G to exclusively house Boesemani Rainbows...

That will be amazing looking! How cool! My 55G sits in a cheery wood cabinet. I have sandstone-colored gravel and two decorations that are the same - they looked like mesas from the desert or something. The fake plants are all some form of green, so it does appear very desert-like. For the new tank, I'm thinking about doing a black cabinet or something similar. The substrate will be blue or green or something with more subdued rocks/ornaments (grey or slate) but brighter plants. I'm going for a more marine look to contrast with the other tank. I'm not sure how soon I'll get around to it though, so I may change my mind by then. ROFL

I might be able to get started much sooner than I thought!
My daughter and I went to a new LFS today (it's closer to my in-laws than the other 2 I usually visit close to my office) to get some Furan 2 and decided to check out their fish - what an idea that was.
They had as many fish as the Petco, Petsmart, and other two LFS' I frequent combined. Not only did they have some quite striking Boesmani Rainbows but they also had Australian, Ornate, and New Guinea Rainbows. The New Guineas were particularly interesting because they were a deep red, almost like clay bricks.
When we got back to the in-laws, I had to tell my father-in-law about it - he's really the person that got me started with aquaria. I told him as soon as I could afford it, I want to get a really big tank and get both Boesmani and New Guinea Rainbows.
That's when he told me that he's just getting to old and tired to keep fish anymore. He's got 1 old Oscar left out of a group of 4 and even that is becoming tiresome to maintain.
He said that I could HAVE his 90G tank! It's going to be perfect for rainbows!

I agree!
As I know kagome could attest to, Rainbows are beautiful and active fish, with many "new" rainbows available today that were not some years back.

I'm not sure I want to take on his "personality". He's the only 1 of 4 left because he "eliminated" the other three.
