over filtration....or filter redundency is good.....but you can have to much oxygen in the tank. signs of that are usually simple to see on larger fish. air bubbles seem to come out of the scales. this is called oxygen intoxication. your disolved oxygen should not be higher than 10 parts /million, and can be as low as 2.8ppm. we keep our fish farm at 7-8ppm.

btw....this is 100% saturation on our farm at around 70 degrees. where this will cause a problem is if there are too many mini bubbles in the tank. you see it often in seafood stores that keep live fish.also.....see Carls article on redox as that is directly related to dissolved oxygen...

Good luck with your fry! My first little batch didn't make it. Hopefully someday I will have some more. Right now I don't have anywhere to put fry even if my platies decided to go at it again.

Hmmm .How do you check the oxygen? I tried putting both females in the tank with the babies but they did NOTHING BUT FIGHT! they got a long in the other tank, but when it was just the both of them, There was more nipping and tail flicking! I had to take one out and put her back in the other tank! The mother of the babies now is in with them.. she went towards a couple but they are so fast, I don't even think she seen which direction they went in. heck I couldn't! LOL But she is holding again. but what ever she has this time is the last batch, this would make three... but like I was told before, she could hold for another month after getting her away from the males...... i put some frozen blood worms in there last night and the babies were so funny trying to eat it, they kind of looked like a dog shaking something in its mouth.. but they LOVED it, they aren't even bigger then a minute!!!!

Disolved Oxygen Test Kits are available, although they are more commonly sold for marine aquarists, they work well for both FW and SW, See this article: Aquarium Answers; Test Kits (see the marine test kit section) Carl
