When would be a good time to move my Mom platy to the breeding net? If I put her in there too soon, she'll get all stressed out, won't she?
She's getting bigger every day, but she's not quite as big as some pregnant platys I've seen pictures of. But then, she's on the smaller side to begin with.

look for a brown spot to develop on her "backside" - can't remember the name, gravid spot maybe - that's a sign she's getting close - also she will appear larger in the back area as she gettings closer to pushing them out

Ok, I can sort of see a dark spot above her anal fin area. She's getting wide too, but not too far back yet. Now I have a better idea of what to look for. Thanks!!

Well, I missed it!!! I checked on her this morning and she looks back to normal. I am so disappointed. I thought she had several days left. I haven't checked for survivors yet. I'm not very hopeful about that though, considering how many bottom-skulkers I have.
On my way home from church I stopped and grabbed a few more platies. One is a yellow one that looks half mickey mouse, half twin barred. One is a very small one that I believe is female, it may still be too small to be sure, and one that is either a very pregnant red wag or it may actually be a red wag balloon molly-type thing of some sort. It's kind of silly looking, but I thought I'd try it. So I went to the lfs to get some more females, and I actually only ended up with 1 that I'm sure is a female platy, lol. Oh well. They're still cute!
I think I'm going to move my Red female betta out of the QT tank and into the 30. Hopefully she and Pinky the betta will be able to coexist peacefully! I think it'll be ok, since the tank is bigger and should have enough hiding places for an adult fish.

Yeah, I will definitely write the date down so I know when to look for more. Do you think that it'll be a pretty regular thing now that they got going?

Congrats on the new fish Babygeige. They will give birth often. When they get pregnant, after the first birth, you can count on them to keep having babies each month for few months after that (unless the platy gestation is more than 4 weeks)!

Thanks Renee. I am going to post some pics of the new fish I bought in the photo section. They're nothing spectacular, but I think they're cute.
I checked the 30 thoroughly this afternoon trying to spot some surviving fry, but no luck. Hopefully I'll be able to catch Platy Girl next month before she has them again. Now at least I know about what size she'll be, so I'll be better prepared!

i actually had her seperated from all other fish. She had them in the small tank. She ate half of two.... And i think I killed two by pouring the water in the tank. I didnt know she had them until I started changing water... I have moved her back to the big one, But I went today And bought a 20 gallon , AS soon as I put her in the big tank. wasnt 10 sec and the males were after her again, and she had to try and dodge them all evening. So now i have to wait on the tank to cycle, But I am taking the females out as soon as I can, poor girls.... Any way, Thanks on the congrats I assume she will probably have another batch about the time the other tank will be ready. I hate it for her. But I don't want to get rid of her... Just get her away from the males! geez enough is enough already.. they are stressing her out!

yup, mollies are that way and swords too - platys.....sometimes, never raised guppies, but livebearers can be outrageous!

Hope everything went well with the rest of the fry. Livebearers love to breed 24/7 in my opinion. Every chance they get. In my all male guppy tank, the males display and try to breed with each other every chance they get. Only the 2 older males don't try to breed. The rest try to breed with each other, their siblings, father, you name it! I have them on a dresser by my bed. I witnessed a record of 4 males chasing each other at once, all trying to breed with the male in the cahse in front of them. Very hilarious.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. But if your males are anything like me, if you take the females out for a while, they might try to start breeding with each other. Crazy I know. lol

well I am definitely taking the females out. If the males want to chase each other then so be it... at least i wont have any more babies. i have counted 22 babies which I'm hoping they will be OK in that 2.5 gallon for a little longer until that 20 gallon cycles. although when i put the water in it and the prime. about an hour later the water parameters were great! better then my established tank?

be sure and wrap gauze around your filter intake or put a sponge filter on it or the fry will get sucked in when you put them into the 20 - not sure what kind of filter you have - waht are you using in the 2.5?

Im not going to use the 2.5 any more except for the hospital tank. I just ordered a sponge filter from Carl for the 20 gallon, I have a HOB on it right now, I will also keep that in it even when I get the Sponge filter, like I did with my 14 gallon. plus have 3 bubblers in the 14 gallon. Am putting a bubbler stone in the 20 gallon also today, had to go by some longer tubing. I once heard on here said You can never have to much filteration, or oxygen in it, So i made sure both have plenty! Out of the 15 babies I had in the 2.5 gallon i only have 8 left. So I'm really hoping the rest will make it.
